Biograph Company
The Biograph Company, also known as the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, was a motion picture company founded in 1895 and active until 1916. It was the first company in the United States devoted entirely to film production and exhibition, and for two decades was one of the most prolific, releasing over 3000 short films and 12 feature films. During the height of silent film as a medium, Biograph was America's most prominent film studio and one of the most respected and influential studios worldwide, only rivaled by Germany's UFA, Sweden's Svensk Filmindustri and France's Pathé. Adolph Lestina (1861– August 23, 1923) was an American stage and film actor who was a member of D. W. Griffith's stock company of film actors. Career He received positive notice for his performance in Justin McCarthy's ''If I Were King'' and in Laurence Irving's ''The Fool Hath Said There Is No God''. Lestina's performance in the play ''A Citizen's Home'' was noted as being "sympathetic". Lestina was credited with "discovering" D. W. Griffith. Alfred Paget (2 June 1879 – 8 October 1919) was an English silent film actor best known for his portrayal of Prince Belshazzar in D.W. Griffith's 1916 historical epic ''Intolerance''. He appeared in more than 230 films between 1908 and 1918. Prior to his film career, he had served from 1899 to 1903 in the Royal Horse Guards of the British Army. Grace C. F. Roth Henderson (January 1860 – October 30, 1944) was an American stage actress and prolific performer in silent motion pictures. Biography Henderson was born Grace C. F. Roth in Ann Arbor, Michigan in January 1860. Her father William (Wilhelm) F. was a justice of the peace born in Stuttgart in 1823, who died on April 19, 1871, in Ann Arbor. She made her professional debut at McKiver's Theatre in Chicago in 1877. A decade later she began a successful run at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City. She originated the role of "Lucille Ferrand" in ''The Wife''. In 1896, she starred in ''Under the Polar Star'', an elaborate play complete with a facsimile of a large sailing ship and real on-stage sled dogs. ''Under Southern Skies'' followed in 1901. Elmer Booth
William Elmer Booth (December 9, 1882 – June 16, 1915) was an American stage and film actor. He was born in Los Angeles, California and was the elder brother of Margaret Booth, a renowned film editor for Hollywood productions for nearly 70 years. Career Elmer began acting in touring stock companies as a teenager and achieved great success in the stock company at the Central Theater in San Francisco from 1903-1906. Between 1910 and 1915 he starred in 40 movies; one of those was D. W. Griffith's ''The Musketeers of Pig Alley'' (1912), cited by many film experts as the first gangster movie. Playing "The Snapper Kid", a Manhattan street tough engaged in a turf war on the Lower East Side, Booth interpreted the gangster as a cocky, entertaining antihero, far different from the standard teeth-gnashing movie bad guys of his time.
