The Michael Nesmith Radio Special
In 1980, Pacific Arts issued ''The Michael Nesmith Radio Special'' to promote Nesmith's latest album ''Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma''. Because ''Infinite Rider'' was originally released as a multimedia project, the radio special was designed to increase awareness of Nesmith's audio-visual productions, as well as promote the album. The radio special comprises segments of an interview with Nesmith intercut with tracks from ''Infinite Rider''. During the interview, Nesmith discusses The Monkees, his first public acknowledgement of his former band since the dedication on his 1970 album, '' Magnetic South''. As with many of Nesmith's compositions, the title of his songs were often indefinite. When he recorded the radio special, Nesmith had yet to finalize the song titles for ''Infinite Rider'' and the alternate track names are listed along with the interview. Michael Nesmith
Robert Michael Nesmith or Mike Nesmith, (December 30, 1942 – December 10, 2021) was an American musician, songwriter, and actor. He was best known as a member of the pop rock band the Monkees and co-star of the TV series ''The Monkees'' (1966–1968). His songwriting credits include "Different Drum," which became a hit for Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. After the break-up of the Monkees, Nesmith continued his successful songwriting and performing career, first with the seminal country rock group the First National Band, with whom he had a top-40 hit, " Joanne", and then as a solo artist. He often played a custom-built Gretsch 12-string electric with the Monkees and afterwards. Nesmith founded Pacific Arts, a multimedia production and distribution company, in 1974, through which he helped pioneer the music video format. The Pacific Arts Corporation, Inc. is a company formed by Michael Nesmith circa 1974 to manage and develop media projects. History Pacific Arts Corporation, Inc. began as Pacific Arts Productions, Inc. when incorporated on October 18, 1974, as a California corporation by Michael Nesmith (incorporated by Nesmith's accountant, Howard Leitner of Leitner, Zander, Sniderman & Co., Los Angeles). The first product released under Pacific Arts Productions was under the subsidy of the Pacific Arts Records label in September 1974 of Nesmith's own concept album, '' The Prison''. Infinite Rider On The Big Dogma
''Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma'' (or simply, ''Infinite Rider'') is Michael Nesmith's ninth post- Monkees studio album and the third studio album from his own company, Pacific Arts Records & Tapes. To continue developing Pacific Arts' multimedia projects, Nesmith originally developed the album as a "video album" (however, to date, ''Infinite Rider'' has only been released as a music album).Michael Nesmith Radio Special It peaked at No. 151 on the Billboard Pop albums charts. The album was well received with both "Cruisin" and "Factions" garnering significant airplay during July and August 1979 on Album Oriented Rock radio stations. The Monkees
The Monkees were an American rock and pop band, formed in Los Angeles in 1966, whose lineup consisted of the American actor/musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork alongside English actor/singer Davy Jones. The group was conceived in 1965 by television producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the situation comedy series of the same name. Music credited to the band was released on LP, as well as being included in the show, which aired from 1966 to 1968. While the sitcom was a mostly straightforward affair, the music production generated tension and controversy almost from the beginning. Magnetic South (album)
''Magnetic South'' is the first solo album by American singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith during his post-Monkees career. Released by RCA Records in 1970, the album peaked at Number 143 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts and Number 49 in Canada. ''Magnetic South'' is considered an early example of country rock. A single, " Joanne/One Rose" was taken from the album and reached Number 21 on the Billboard singles charts and Number 6 on the Adult Contemporary charts, #5 on the Australian chart, and #4 in Canada. It was the highest position of Nesmith's solo career. History Nesmith formed the backing group "The First National Band" and gave them billing on both the cover and label of the record. Cruisin' (Nesmith Song)
"Cruisin'", also known as "Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam", is the last single to be released by Michael Nesmith as a solo artist. The song was released in 1979 under Pacific Arts (PAC 108) from the album '' Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma''. The B-side of the single was "Carioca". "Cruisin'" tells the story of three individuals who live on the streets of Los Angeles, California and are related by their lifestyle. Background A promotional video was made for ''Cruisin and was released on Nesmith's '' Elephant Parts''. Contrary to popular belief, the video did not debut Hulk Hogan, but rather, featured wrestler Steve Strong who resembles a young Hulk Hogan. Nesmith mistakenly stated in 1989 that Hogan played the role, but he corrected his statement in 2003. The song received considerable airplay on AOR rock stations during the summer of 1979.
