''The Merry Vineyard'' (german: Der fröhliche Weinberg) is a 1927 German silent comedy film directed by Jacob Fleck and Luise Fleck and starring Rudolf Rittner, Camilla Horn and Lotte Neumann.Goble p. 774 It was based on a play by Carl Zuckmayer, which was remade in 1952 as a sound film. The film's art direction was by Oscar Friedrich Werndorff. Jacob Fleck
Jacob Fleck (8 November 1881 in Vienna as Jacob Julius Fleck – 19 September 1953, also in Vienna) was an Austrian film director, screenwriter, film producer and cameraman. He is noted for his long-standing professional partnership with his wife Luise Fleck who co-directed his films with him. Biography In 1910, together with Anton Kolm, Kolm's wife Luise (who later married Fleck), and her brother Claudius Veltée, Jacob Fleck established the film production company ''Erste Österreichische Kinofilms-Industrie'' in Wien-Alsergrund. The company changed its name only a year later to ''Wiener Kunstfilm-Industrie'', in which Fleck worked partly as a cameraman, but principally as a producer and director together with Luise Kolm in making numerous films. Anton Kolm died in 1922. In 1923 Fleck moved with Luise Kolm to Berlin, where they married in 1924: Luise was known from then on as Luise Fleck. Both of them worked for Hegewald-Film and UFA. Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940) was an American sculptor, best known for his death mask of President Ulysses S. Grant and a portrait bust of Mark Twain. Biography Karl Gerhardt was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 7, 1853. He attended Phillips School in Boston. By 1870 he was apprenticed to a house painter in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where he later became a machinist at Ames Foundry. He showed considerable talent in mechanics, and later became a designer of machinery at Hartford, Connecticut. In 1874, he went to California. By 1880, he had returned east to Hartford, and married Harriet Josephine Gloyd. He worked for a spell as chief machinist at the Pratt and Whitney Machine Tool Company in Hartford and pursued sculpting in his leisure hours. Elisabeth Neumann-Viertel
Elisabeth Neumann-Viertel (5 April 1900 – 24 December 1994) was an Austrian actress who started her career in Germany during the 1920s. Under the Nazi regime she emigrated to the United States, where she appeared on the Broadway and in a few Hollywood movies. She later returned to Germany, where she worked with numerous successful theatres of Berlin, among them Fritz Kortner's Berliner Bühnen. Neumann-Viertel was also a notable character actress in films and television, although she seldom played a leading role there. She retired in the late 1980s after nearly 70 years of acting. Heinrich Gotho
Heinrich Gotho (May 3, 1872 – August 28, 1938) was an Austrian film actor. Born in Dolina (now in Ukraine), he started his acting career at some provincial theatres until he found an engagement at the Neues Volkstheater in Berlin. The character actor appeared in over 50 films between 1922 and 1933, mostly in smaller roles. He notably appeared in numerous films by director Fritz Lang, among them '' Dr. Mabuse the Gambler'' (1922), ''Metropolis'' (1927) and '' M'' (1931). Gotho was forced to retire from film acting in 1933; as a Jew he could no longer work in Nazi Germany. He died in 1938 in the ''Jewish Hospital'' of Berlin-Wedding. Carl De Vogt
Carl de Vogt (14 September 1885 – 16 February 1970) was a German film actor who starred in four of Fritz Lang's early films. He attended the acting school in Cologne, Germany. Together with acting he was also active as a singer and recorded several discs. His greatest hit was "Der Fremdenlegionär". An extremely successful actor in his early career, he died in relative obscurity in 1970. In 1919 and 1920, de Vogt starred in director Fritz Lang's two-part ''Spiders'' films opposite actresses Lil Dagover and Ressel Orla. In 1932, in the early sound era, he played the Prussian hero Major Schill in the big-budget historical film '' The Eleven Schill Officers''.
