The Medium (1951 Film)
''The Medium'' ( it, Il medium) is a 1951 Italian drama film directed by Gian Carlo Menotti. It is based on the opera of the same name and was entered into the 1952 Cannes Film Festival. It would later be screened out of competition at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. Plot Madame Flora is a fraudulent medium, mother of Toby, who is mute and crippled. This condition of Toby's is important for plucking clients... During a session, Flora feels a hand squeezing her throat. She deduces that this is her son's doing and throws him out into the rain. Toby returns, to meet with Monica, his girlfriend and Flora's assistant. Flora thinks thieves have broken into the house and kills her son. Is she punished-by divine intervention? Gian Carlo Menotti
Gian Carlo Menotti (, ; July 7, 1911 – February 1, 2007) was an Italian composer, librettist, director, and playwright who is primarily known for his output of 25 operas. Although he often referred to himself as an American composer, he kept his Italian citizenship. One of the most frequently performed opera composers of the 20th century, his most successful works were written in the 1940s and 1950s. Highly influenced by Giacomo Puccini and Modest Mussorgsky, Menotti further developed the verismo tradition of opera in the post-World War II era. Rejecting atonality and the aesthetic of the Second Viennese School, Menotti's music is characterized by expressive lyricism which carefully sets language to natural rhythms in ways that highlight textual meaning and underscore dramatic intent. Leopoldo Savona (1922–2000) was an Italian actor, director, choreographer, and screenwriter. He directed 18 films between 1954 and 1976. He was sometimes credited as Leo Colman or Leo Coleman. Anna Maria Alberghetti (; born May 15, 1936) is an Italian-American actress and soprano. Biography Born May 15, 1936, in Pesaro, Marche, in central Italy, she starred on Broadway and won a Tony Award in 1962 as Best Actress (Musical) for '' Carnival!'' (she tied with Diahann Carroll for the musical ''No Strings''). Alberghetti was a child prodigy. Her father was an opera singer and concert master of the Rome Opera Company. Her mother was a pianist. Chandler Ruel Cowles (September 29, 1917 – February 1, 1997) was an American actor, producer, and co-producer in at least eleven New York theatrical productions from 1946 through 1960. Early life Cowles was born in 1917 in New Haven, Connecticut. Career Cowles collaborated closely with Gian-Carlo Menotti and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. on many of these and also was a lifelong friend of ballet legend George Balanchine, with whom he worked on the 1947 Broadway production of ''The Telephone/The Medium''.
