The Mattress Factory
The Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was a pioneer of site-specific installation art and features permanent installations by artists Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, and Greer Lankton. The museum's roof itself is a light art installation and part of Pittsburgh's Northside evening skyline. Barbara Luderowski purchased a derelict Stearns & Foster mattress warehouse in 1975. The museum achieved non-profit status in 1977. Over the next forty years, Luderowski would attract upcoming installation artists to fill its walls. The Mattress Factory along with its neighbors City of Asylum and Randyland are credited with playing a role in Pittsburgh's revitalization. WESA (FM)
WESA (90.5 MHz) is a public FM radio station based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The station broadcasts with an ERP of 25 kW. WESA is a full member station of NPR and is also affiliated with Public Radio International and American Public Media. History Prior to being WESA, the station had the call sign WDUQ, owned by Duquesne University. As of fall 2001, WDUQ was the most listened-to public radio outlet in Pittsburgh. WDUQ began broadcasting on December 15, 1949 as a student laboratory on the Duquesne University campus, exposing students to new technology and giving local audiences access to cultural programs and information. Bill Woodrow (born 1 November 1948) is a British sculptor. Early years and education Bill Woodrow was born on 1 November 1948 near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. He received his education at the Winchester College of Art (1967–1968), the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London (1968–1971), and the Chelsea School of Art (1971–1972).. Artistic career Woodrow was one of a number of British sculptors to emerge in the late 1970s on to the international contemporary art scene, together with fellow artists like Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg. Materials found in dumps, used car lots and scrap yards formed the raw materials for his early works; by partly embedding them in plaster, he made them seem as if they had been excavated. Winifred Ann Lutz
Winifred Ann Lutz (born 1942) is an American sculptor, fiber artist, and environmental artist known for her site-integrated installations and handmade paper-making. She is recognized as a key innovator in the field of hand papermaking as art form. She is currently the Laura Carnell Professor Emeritus in sculpture at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Education She graduated from Cleveland Institute of Art with a BFA in 1965, where she triple majored in Sculpture, Ceramics, and Printmaking. Also in 1965, she studied at Atelier 17 in New York City with Stanley William Hayter. She attended Cranbrook Academy of Art and received an MFA in 1968. From 1965 to 1966 Lutz received the Gund Scholarship to study and travel in Egypt and Europe.
