The Masters (novel)
''The Masters'' is the fifth novel in C. P. Snow's series ''Strangers and Brothers''. It involves the election of a new Master at narrator Lewis Eliot's unnamed Cambridge College, which resembles Christ's College where Snow was a fellow. The 1951 novel's dedication is "In memory of G. H. Hardy", the Cambridge mathematician. It was the first of the ''Strangers and Brothers'' series to be published in the United States. Plot synopsis The novel is set in 1937, with the growing threat from Nazi Germany as the backdrop. The two candidates for election as new Master are Crawford, who is politically radical and prepared to make sure the college makes a stand against appeasing Hitler, but who Eliot believes will not be good at dealing with people; and Jago, who Eliot believes would make a good master, but whose wife is seen by some as a liability. Strangers And Brothers
''Strangers and Brothers'' is a series of novels by C. P. Snow, published between 1940 and 1970. They deal with – among other things – questions of political and personal integrity, and the mechanics of exercising power. Plot All eleven novels in the series are narrated by the character Lewis Eliot. The series follows his life and career from humble beginnings in an English provincial town, to reasonably successful London lawyer, to Cambridge don, to wartime service in Whitehall, to senior civil servant and finally retirement. ''The New Men'' deals with the scientific community's involvement in (and reaction to) the development and deployment of nuclear weapons during the Second World War. Alan Wheatley
Alan Wheatley (19 April 1907 – 30 August 1991) was an English actor. He was a well known stage actor in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, appeared in forty films between 1931 and 1965 and was a frequent broadcaster on radio from the 1930s to the 1990s, and on television from 1938 to 1964. His most prominent television role was the Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1950s TV series ''The Adventures of Robin Hood'', with Richard Greene as Robin Hood; Wheatley played the sheriff in 54 episodes between 1955 and 1959. Earlier, he had played Sherlock Holmes in the first television series featuring the great detective. In addition to acting, Wheatley was a radio announcer during the Second World War, broadcasting to occupied Europe, where he became a well known voice. Poetry was another of his interests: he translated the poetry of Federico García Lorca and was a frequent reader of poems on air. Joanna Monro (born 1956) is a British actress and former television presenter who, in the 1980s, appeared on the BBC show ''That's Life!'' with Esther Rantzen. Adam Levy (actor)
Adam Levy (born 5 December 1970) is a British actor best known for his role as Peter in ''A.D. The Bible Continues''. Career Levy trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and spent a great deal of his early career working in theatre where he was a member of the Royal National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) acting companies over a period of years and performed in a wide variety of Shakespeare productions. Hugh Anthony Quarshie (born 22 December 1954) is a Ghanaian-born British actor. David Haig
David Haig Collum Ward (born 20 September 1955) is an English actor and playwright. He has appeared in West End productions and numerous television and film roles over a career spanning four decades. Haig wrote the play '' My Boy Jack'', which premièred at the Hampstead Theatre on 13 October 1997. On Remembrance Day 2007, ITV broadcast a television drama based on the play, in which Haig played Rudyard Kipling and Daniel Radcliffe played Kipling's son, John.
