The Love Match
''The Love Match'' is a 1955 British black and white comedy film directed by David Paltenghi and starring Arthur Askey, Glenn Melvyn, Thora Hird and Shirley Eaton. A football-mad railway engine driver and his fireman are desperate to get back in time to see a match. It was based on the 1953 play by Glenn Melvyn, one of the stars of the film. A TV spin-off series ''Love and Kisses'', appeared later in 1955. David Paltenghi
David Paltenghi (1919 – 4 February 1961) was a British ballet dancer, choreographer, director and film director. Early life David Paltenghi was born in 1919 in Christchurch, Hampshire (now Dorset), the son of a Swiss-Italian father and English mother. Career Dancer He was a dancer with Ballet Rambert, until joining Sadler's Wells Ballet in 1941. Paltenghi created leading roles in Robert Helpmann's ''Miracle in the Gorbals'' in 1944 and '' Adam Zero'' in 1946, both for Sadler's Wells Ballet. Choreographer In 1950, he rejoined Ballet Rambert as a guest artist, and as a choreographer, created five ballets from 1950-51. The last was ''Canterbury Prologue'', based on Chaucer's ''Canterbury Tales'' with music by Peter Racine Fricker and designs by the artist Edward Burra, who he had met when they both worked on ''Miracle in the Gorbals''. Anthea Shirley Askey (2 March 1933 – 28 February 1999) was an English actress, particularly prominent on television in the 1950s. Anthea Askey was born in Golders Green, north London, to the comedian and actor Arthur Askey, and his wife Elizabeth May Swash. She featured in many television roles alongside her father. Her early television appearances included '' Love and Kisses'', where she played Rose Brown, whose father Bill was played by her father; while other TV and films include ''The Love Match'', ''Ramsbottom Rides Again'', ''Before Your Very Eyes'', ''Living It Up'', ''The Dickie Henderson Half-Hour'', ''Arthur's Treasured Volumes'' and a cameo appearance in ''Make Mine a Million'' in 1959. National Film Finance Corporation
The National Film Finance Corporation (NFFC) was a film funding agency in the United Kingdom in operation from 1949 until 1985. The NFFC was established by the Cinematograph Film Production (Special Loans) Act 1949, and further enhanced by the Cinematograph Film Production (Special Loans) Act 1952, which gave the NFFC the power to borrow from sources other than the Board of Trade. The NFFC was abolished by the Films Act 1985. The lawyer John Terry (from 1976, Sir John) served as the NFFC's manager for twenty years from 1958 to 1978. During that time, he helped to secure the backing for hundreds of films launching the careers of director Ridley Scott and producer David Puttnam, among many others. Janet Kathleen Davies (14 September 1927 – 22 September 1986) was an English actress best known for her recurring role as Mrs. Pike in the long-running sitcom ''Dad's Army''. Maurice Harington Kaufmann (29 June 1927 – 21 September 1997) was a British actor of stage, film and television, who specialised in whodunits and horror films, from 1954 to 1981, when he retired. Personal life He was married to Honor Blackman from 1961 to 1975; they appeared together in the film, '' Fright'' (1971). Peter Swanwick
Walter Peter Swanwick (29 September 1922 – 14 November 1968) was a British actor best remembered as the "Supervisor" (sometimes called the Controller) in the 1967 TV series, ''The Prisoner''. Swanwick's film career began with bit parts in films such as '' The African Queen'' (1951), and he became a recognisable face on British TV during the mid-1960s when he featured in a number of series, including '' The Avengers'' and ''Danger Man'' where he first worked with later ''Prisoner'' star and co-creator, Patrick McGoohan. According to several biographies Swanwick endured major health problems in the 1960s that resulted in his undergoing undisclosed operations that left him with a short time to live. Leonard Williams (actor)
Leonard Williams (born West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire 1914 - died London 15 November 1962) was an English actor. He was best known for playing Sergeant Percy Twentyman on the police television series ''Z-Cars''. According to Brian Blessed he was "the joker of the cast", who spent his time on set making his colleagues laugh. Williams also played the characters of Theodore Craythorpe & Harry Whittle in the BBC radio comedy series ''The Clitheroe Kid''. He also made regular appearances opposite Harry Worth on television. He died of a heart attack at his flat in Lexham Gardens, Kensington. He was father to two children; Leon & Marianne, and was husband to Imelda. He was the nephew of actor George Carney.
