''The Long Shadow'' is a 1961 British second feature, a drama film directed by Peter Maxwell and starring John Crawford, Susan Hampshire and Willoughby Goddard. It was filmed at Pinewood Studios. Plot summary In Vienna during the Cold War, the Russians and Americans try to gain control of a boy who can be manipulated for political purposes. An American newspaper journalist attempts to save the Hungarian child and a Swedish nurse from certain death. Peter Maxwell
Peter Maxwell (23 January 1921 – 5 April 2013) born as Peter Magitai, was a British, and later Australian film director, director and screenwriter of television and film. Biography He was born in Vienna, Austria, to newspaper journalist Leo Magatai and wife Johanna, his family fled Vienna in the 1930s, and he changed his surname to enter the British Army, and after having been posted to India, returned to Britain to work as an assistant director to Alexander Korda in 1949, he worked briefly in Australia in the early 1960s, before returning to England. In 1967 he emigrated to Australia permanently, where he directed such films as ''Country Town'' and television series including ''Bellbird (TV series), Bellbird'', ''Riptide (Australian TV series), Rip Tide'' and ''A Country Practice''. Humphrey Lestocq
Humphrey Lestocq (23 January 1919 – 29 January 1984) was a British actor, best known for his roles in '' Angels One Five'' (1952) and '' The Long Shadow'' (1961), and guest appearances in the television series '' The Avengers''. Lestocq shot to fame as Flying Officer Kyte in the BBC radio wartime comedy '' Merry-Go-Round'' (1944–1948), which later evolved into ''Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh''. He was also one of the presenters on the TV series ''Whirligig'', the first children's programme to be broadcast live from the BBC's Lime Grove Studios. It ran from 1950 to 1956. Calling himself "H.L.", he was the stooge of the puppet Mr. Turnip, voiced by Peter Hawkins. Lestocq's catchphrases were "Goody, Goody Gumdrops" and "Jolly D", and Mr. Turnip's was "Lawky, Lawky, Lum". The Cold War is a term commonly used to refer to a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc. Manning O'Brine
Paddy Manning O'Brine was an Irish writer of thrillers and television screenplays about whom surprisingly little is known. His date of birth is uncertain: at least one authoritative source gives it as 1915; the dust jacket of his last American publication, however, says that he was born in Connemara, Ireland, in 1913 with dual Irish and Italian citizenship. Internet booksellers frequently give his date of death as 1977. All of his novels concern espionage and/or secret agents and often feature sadistic Nazis who have survived World War II and are hunted down and killed.
