The Litany Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus
The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a formal prayer in the Catholic Church dedicated to Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is one of six approved litanies for public use. History The litany is made up of portions of earlier litanies dating to the seventeenth century. This included invocations composed by Jean Croiset S.J. in 1681, and ten by the Visitandine Anne-Madeleine Remuzat, plus others for a total of thirty-three, as in the years of Jesus' earthly life. Pope Leo XIII approved the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for public usage in 1899. It is traditionally prayed on the First Fridays of the month and on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus ( la, Cor Jesu Sacratissimum) is one of the most widely practised and well-known Catholic devotions, wherein the heart of Jesus is viewed as a symbol of "God's boundless and passionate love for mankind". The word comes through Latin ''litania'' from Ancient Greek λιτανεία (''litaneía''), which in turn comes from λιτή (''litḗ''), meaning "supplication". Anne-Madeleine Remuzat
Anne-Madeleine Remuzat (29 November 1696 – 15 February 1730) was a French Roman Catholic nun who was instrumental in spreading Catholic devotion to the Sacred Heart. Life Anne Remuzat was born at Marseilles, 29 November 1696, into a pious, wealthy family, and was baptized the same day in the Église Notre-Dame-des-Accoules. Her father was a merchant. At nine years of age she asked to be allowed to enter the convent of the Visitation. After initially refusing, her parents finally allowed her to enter the second Monastery of the Visitation, where one of her relatives was a nun. In 1709 Remuzat returned home and became active in various works of charity. Her vocation grew stronger in contact with the sick and the poor. In 1711 she entered as a postulant the First Monastery of the Visitation (the 'Grandes-Maries'), where there was a chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The First Fridays Devotion, also called the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is a Catholic devotion to offer reparations for sins and which had its origin in the apparitions of Christ at Paray-le-Monial, France, reported by Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century. The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a feast day in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church and certain Anglo-Catholic communities that is dedicated to the Sacred Heart.
