''The Lion and the Mouse'' is a lost 1914 silent film drama directed by Barry O'Neil and starring Ethel Clayton. It was produced by the Lubin Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia and distributed through the General Film Company. The film was adapted from the 1905 stage production ''The Lion and the Mouse'' by English playwright Charles Klein. Unfortunately, the master negative for the screen production was destroyed in the disastrous Lubin vault fire of 1914, along with the bulk of that studio's pre-1914 film collection. Barry O'Neil
Barry O'Neil (September 24, 1865 – March 23, 1918) was a film director and writer. His real name was Thomas J. McCarthy. He directed several Thanhouser films including the production company's first two-reeler,https://www.thanhouser.org/TCOCD/Narrative_files/c2s9.htm/ ''Romeo and Juliet''. He went on to work for Lubin and then World Film Corporation. He was born in New York City. O'Neil married actress Nellie Walters. In 1913 O'Neil was elected to The Lambs as a non-resident member. He died of apoplexy. In 1910 and 1911 he filmed adaptations of a couple William Shakespeare plays. In 1915 he filmed a version of ''McTeague'' in Death Valley released as '' Life's Whirlpool''. Lubin (; german: Lüben, szl, Lubin) is a city in Lower Silesian Voivodeship in south-western Poland. Lubin Manufacturing Company
The Lubin Manufacturing Company was an American motion picture production company that produced silent films from 1896 to 1916. Lubin films were distributed with a Liberty Bell trademark. History The Lubin Manufacturing Company was formed in 1902 and incorporated in 1909 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Siegmund Lubin. The company was the offspring of Lubin's film equipment and film distribution and production business, which began in 1896. Siegmund Lubin, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, was originally an optical and photography expert in Philadelphia but became intrigued with Thomas Edison's motion picture camera and saw the potential in selling similar equipment as well as in making films. Known as "Pop" Lubin, he constructed his own combined camera/projector he called a "Cineograph" and his lower price and marketing know-how brought reasonable success.
