The Linemen
The Linemen were an American Alternative Country band originating from Washington, D.C, formed in 1991. The group's members were Kevin Royal Johnson (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Jonathan Gregg (lead vocals, guitar, pedal steel), Bill Williams (guitars, vocals), Antoine Sanfuentes (drums), and Scott McKnight ( bass, vocals). Kevin Johnson and the Linemen released four albums on the SAM Records label before taking a hiatus in 2001. In 2013, the band announced a return as simply The Linemen, and their fifth full-length album, ''Close the Place Down'', was released on the SAM Records label in October 2016. The band's final performance was at Swamp Stomp in Kingston, RI on July 21, 2018. Steel Guitar
A steel guitar ( haw, kīkākila) is any guitar played while moving a steel bar or similar hard object against plucked strings. The bar itself is called a "steel" and is the source of the name "steel guitar". The instrument differs from a conventional guitar in that it is played without using frets; conceptually, it is somewhat akin to playing a guitar with one finger (the bar). Known for its portamento capabilities, gliding smoothly over every pitch between notes, the instrument can produce a sinuous crying sound and deep vibrato emulating the human singing voice. Typically, the strings are plucked (not strummed) by the fingers of the dominant hand, while the steel tone bar is pressed lightly against the strings and moved by the opposite hand. Barbara Brousal
Barbara Brousal (born October 6, 1966) is a Boston, Massachusetts–based singer-songwriter, teacher, and politician. She sings, plays guitar and mandolin and has composed songs on four children's albums with Dan Zanes and Friends including the Grammy-winner ''Catch That Train''. Additionally, she toured with Dan Zanes and Friends from 2000 to the fall of 2006. Brousal has also released three solo albums of original material, ''Breathing Down Your Neck'' (1996), ''Pose While It Pops'' (2000), and ''Just About Perfect'' (2002). Her songs have appeared on the soap opera ''One Life to Live'' and in the independent film '' Hold This.'' Brousal wrote the music for the play Brooklyn Bridge, by playwright Melissa James Gibson, and performed in its premier at the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis, MN. Minor Threat
Minor Threat was an American hardcore punk band, formed in 1980 in Washington, D.C. by vocalist Ian MacKaye and drummer Jeff Nelson. MacKaye and Nelson had played in several other bands together, and recruited bassist Brian Baker and guitarist Lyle Preslar to form Minor Threat. They added a fifth member, Steve Hansgen, in 1982, playing bass, while Baker switched to second guitar. The band was relatively short-lived, disbanding after only three years together, but had a strong influence on the punk scene, both stylistically and in establishing a " do it yourself" ethic for music distribution and concert promotion. Minor Threat's song " Straight Edge" became the eventual basis of the straight edge movement, which emphasized a lifestyle without alcohol or other drugs, or promiscuous sex. Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.-based independent record label specializing in punk rock. The label is co-owned by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, who founded Dischord in 1980 to release ''Minor Disturbance'' by their band The Teen Idles. Jeff Nelson (musician)
Jeff Nelson (born 1962 in South Africa) is an American drummer and graphic designer. He is best known as the drummer for the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk band Minor Threat. Biography Nelson met Ian MacKaye in high school and the two saw their first punk rock show, The Cramps, together. Soon after, they formed their first band, The Slinkees. After playing one show, a lineup change caused them to rename the band The Teen Idles. He also co-founded the independent record label Dischord Records along with MacKaye in 1980, whose first record was the Teen Idles. They continue to run Dischord together. The duo also comprised the projects Skewbald/Grand Union and Egg Hunt; both bands recorded only one single. John Mayer
John Clayton Mayer ( ; born October 16, 1977) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Born and raised in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Mayer attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, but left and moved to Atlanta in 1997 with Clay Cook. Liz Phair
Elizabeth Clark Phair (born April 17, 1967) is an American singer-songwriter. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Phair was raised primarily in the Chicago area. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1990, she attempted to start a musical career in San Francisco, California, but returned to her home in Chicago, where she began self-releasing audio cassettes under the name Girly Sound, Girly-Sound. John Alagía
John Alagía is an American record producer, composer, mixer and co-founder of Drive Music. Alagia has worked with artists including Lukas Nelson, Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Serena Ryder, Brett Dennen, Rachael Yamagata, Ben Folds, Lifehouse and many others. In his early years, Alagía honed his recording and production skills with friend Douglas Derryberry at Rutabaga Studios in Arlington, Virginia.
