Bannister Merwin
Henry Bannister Merwin (1873 – 22 February 1922), was an American poet, magazine editor, novelist, film director and screenwriter during the silent era. He wrote as many as 141 films between 1909 and 1921. He was associated with Edison Studios and the London Film Company. Merwin often wrote with his wife, Anne Merwin. He was born in Lichfield, Connecticut, United States and died in London, England, United Kingdom. Charles Sutton (actor)
Charles Sutton (1856 – July 20, 1935) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than one hundred films between 1911 and 1923. In addition to his work on film, Sutton acted on stage, including working with the Pasadena Players at the Pasadena Community Playhouse. He left there to go to New York, where he worked in plays, including ''The Three Musketeers''. In his later years, Sutton lived in Englewood, New Jersey, in the Actors Fund Home. On July 20, 1935, he died in Englewood Hospital, aged 79. Mabel Trunnelle (November 8, 1879 – April 20, 1981) was an American actress who appeared in 194 films between 1908 and 1923. Biography Trunnelle was born in Dwight, Illinois and died in Glendale, California. ''Photoplay'' magazine argued that she was the merry-serious girl whose expressive eyes and face mirror emotions more effectively than a hundred voices. She was educated upon the stage for the five years she had spent in films, mostly before Edison cameras. Miss Trunnelle was a modest, cheerful, winsome young American wife whose husband was Herbert Prior. She was a prominent star in early silent films of Edison Films, and frequently co-starred with Prior. Laura Sawyer (February 3, 1885 – September 7, 1970) was an American film actress on stage and in silent films. Early life Sawyer was born in Iron County, Missouri, the daughter of Alvah Hayden and Laurette Sawyer.Corpus Christi Times (Corpus Christi, Texas) September 9, 1970 Her father was a doctor. By 1900 she was a boarder at the Ursuline Academy in St. Louis. Career Sawyer began her career on stage with the Otis Skinner theatrical company and performed in Shakespeare's plays for two years. Edison Studios was an American film production organization, owned by companies controlled by inventor and entrepreneur, Thomas Edison. The studio made close to 1,200 films, as part of the Edison Manufacturing Company (1894–1911) and then Thomas A. Edison, Inc. (1911–1918), until the studio's closing in 1918. Of that number, 54 were feature length, and the remainder were shorts. All of the company's films have fallen into the public domain because they were released before 1925. History The first production facility was Edison's Black Maria studio, in West Orange, New Jersey, built in the winter of 1892–93. The second facility, a glass-enclosed rooftop studio built at 41 East 21st Street in Manhattan's entertainment district, opened in 1901. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Though at the time the technology to synchronize sound with the film did not exist, music was seen as an essential part of the viewing experience.
