Mika Juhani Kaurismäki (; born 21 September 1955) is a Finnish film director. Biography Mika Kaurismäki is the elder brother of Aki Kaurismäki, and the father of Maria Kaurismäki, who graduated from Tampere School of Art and Media in 2008 with her movie ''Sideline''. Kaurismäki has lived in Brazil since approximately 1992 and has made several Brazilian-themed films, including ''Amazon'', ''Tigrero'', ''Sambólico'', ''Rytmi'', and ''Moro no Brasil''. His film '' Brasileirinho'' is a 2005 musical documentary about traditional Brazilian '' choro'' music. Kaurismäki's first film, ''The Liar'' (1980), was an overnight sensation, when first shown in Finland; it marked the beginning of the Kaurismäki brothers' film career and started a new era in Finnish cinema. Aki Olavi Kaurismäki (; born 4 April 1957) is a Finnish film director and screenwriter. He is best known for the award-winning '' Drifting Clouds'' (1996), ''The Man Without a Past'' (2002), ''Le Havre'' (2011) and ''The Other Side of Hope'' (2017), as well as for the mockumentary ''Leningrad Cowboys Go America'' (1989). He is described as Finland's best-known film director. Career After graduating in media studies from the University of Tampere, Kaurismäki worked as a bricklayer, postman, and dish-washer, long before pursuing his interest in cinema, first as a critic, and later as a screenwriter & director. Pirkko Päivikki Hämäläinen (born 29 May 1959) is a Finnish actress. She has worked in theatres, films and on television. Frequently collaborating with director Mika Kaurismäki, she won the Best Actress Jussi Award for her role in Kaurismäki's 1989 film ''Paperitähti''. Personal life Hämäläinen was in a relationship with actor Puntti Valtonen for 17 years. They have two sons together. In 2010, she announced in an interview that her current partner was author Kirsti Simonsuuri. They remained together until Simonsuuri's death from cancer in 2019. Matti Pellonpää (28 March 1951 in Helsinki – 13 July 1995 in Vaasa) was a Finnish actor and a musician. He rose to international fame with his roles in both Aki Kaurismäki's and Mika Kaurismäki's films; particularly being a regular in Aki's films, appearing in 18 of them. Career He started his career in 1962 as a radio actor at the Finnish state-owned broadcasting company YLE. He performed as an actor during the 1970s in many amateur theatres, at the same time that he studied at the Finnish Theatre Academy, where he completed his studies in the year 1977. He was nominated Best Actor by European Film Academy for his role as Rodolfo in ''La Vie de Boheme'' and won the Felix at the European Film Awards in 1992.
