The Leopard Lady
''The Leopard Lady'' is a 1928 American silent horror film directed by Rupert Julian, written by Beulah Marie Dix, and starring Jacqueline Logan, Alan Hale and Robert Armstrong. The film, based on a play by Edward Childs Carpenter, is about a female animal trainer named Paula who goes undercover at a circus that has been beset by a number of unexplained horrific murders. A gorilla trained to kill people turns out to be the culprit, the simian being played by Charles Gemora (who made a career of playing apes in horror films, including 1932's ''Murders in the Rue Morgue''). The cast boasted several name stars who went on to long acting careers, including Alan Hale, Robert Armstrong, and Richard Alexander (who appeared in numerous B-Westerns and serials). Rupert Julian
Rupert Julian (born Thomas Percival Hayes; 25 January 1879 – 27 December 1943) was a New Zealand cinema actor, director, writer and producer. During his career, Julian directed 60 films and acted in over 90 films. He is best remembered for directing Lon Chaney, Sr., Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera (1925 film), ''The Phantom of the Opera'' (1925). He also directed ''The Cat Creeps (1930 film), The Cat Creeps'' (1930), a sound remake of ''The Cat and the Canary (1927 film), The Cat and the Canary'' (1927), which is now considered a lost film, with only two minutes of footage remaining in the 1932 Universal comedy short film ''Boo! Kay Deslys (28 September 1899, in London – 15 August 1974 in West Covina, California) was an English comedy actress, based in the United States from the 1920s on. Born as Kathleen Herbert in London, one of her earliest roles was in Charlie Chaplin's celebrated feature ''The Gold Rush''; she later appeared in several comedies at the Hal Roach Studios, including several early Laurel and Hardy comedies.
