The Ledger Awards
The Ledger Awards are prizes awarded to "acknowledge excellence in Australian comic art and publishing." Named after pioneering Australian cartoonist Peter Ledger (1945–1994), the awards were first held in 2005 to help promote and focus attention on Australian creators and their projects, both in Australia and overseas. Initially, the awards were held annually and announced online on or around Australia Day, 26 January. In recent years, they have been held at the State Library of Victoria on the Friday evening before the Melbourne Supanova convention. History The Ledger Awards began in 2004 as a fully independent, non-profit initiative. ''Small Gods'' is the thirteenth of Terry Pratchett's ''Discworld'' novels, published in 1992. It tells the origin of the god Om, and his relations with his prophet, the reformer Brutha. In the process, it satirises religious institutions, people, and practices, and the role of religion in political life. Plot background Omnia is a theocracy based on the Seven Books of the Prophets of Om. The Discworld is flat and is orbited by its sun, but Omnian doctrine says that the world is round and orbits the sun. Omnians believe in a single god, Om, though the Discworld has many gods, including the billions of Small Gods who exist as points of desire searching for believers. Vertigo Comics, also known as DC Vertigo or simply Vertigo, was an imprint of American comic book publisher DC Comics started by editor Karen Berger in 1993. ''The Losers'' is the name of a war comic book feature published by DC Comics. The name was later given to a reimagined comic book series for DC's Vertigo imprint. The first ''Losers'' comic was a war comics feature set during World War II. Patrick Alexander, sometimes going by the alias Reid, is an Australian cartoonist. Though known for comics such as ''Raymondo Person'', ''The Wraith'', ''Pink Chickens'', ''Mania'', ''Krash'', and ''AAAAAAAH'', Alexander has also collaborated on various Dark Horse Comics publications.
