The Laughter Of Fools
''The Laughter of Fools'' is a 1933 British drama film directed by Adrian Brunel and starring D. A. Clarke-Smith, Derrick De Marney and Helen Ferrers. It was based on a play by H. F. Maltby. The screenplay concerns an ambitious mother who plans to marry her daughter to a sea captain. The film was a quota quickie made at Nettlefold Studios in Walton by the independent producer George Smith as part of a contract from Fox who needed a supply of films to distribute in order to comply with the terms of the quota. Adrian Brunel
Adrian Brunel (4 September 1892 – 18 February 1958) was an English film director and screenwriter. Brunel's directorial career started in the silent era, and reached its peak in the latter half of the 1920s. His surviving work from the 1920s, both full-length feature films and shorts, is highly regarded by silent film historians for its distinctive innovation, sophistication and wit. With the arrival of talkies, Brunel's career ground to a halt and he was absent from the screen for several years before returning in the mid-1930s with a flurry of quota quickie productions, the majority of which are now classed as lost. Brunel's last credit as director was in a 1940 comedy film, although he worked for a few years more as a "fixer-up" for films directed or produced by friends in the industry. Pat Paterson (born Eliza Paterson; 10 April 1910 – 24 August 1978) was an English film actress. Although she made more than 20 films, she is best known as the wife of actor Charles Boyer. Childhood and early life Paterson was born on 10 April 1910 at No.74 Fitzgerald Street, Horton, a suburb of Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire. Her mother, Hannah Holroyd (b. 4 February 1888, Bradford) was English, her father, John Robb Paterson (b. 1888, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland) was a Scot. Eliza was the second of three children. Dorothy Vernon (born Dorothea Christine Arens, November 11, 1875 – October 28, 1970) was a German-born American film actress. Born Dorothea Christine Arens as the daughter of a Lighthouse warden, she emigrated into the United States as late as 1897. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1919 and 1956. She died in Granada Hills, California from heart disease, aged 94. Her son was actor and entertainer Bobby Vernon.
