The Late, Late Show is the debut album of American jazz singer Dakota Staton. The album was released on Capitol Records in 1957. The album contained Staton's greatest hit, "The Late, Late Show". Reception AllMusic critic Scott Yanow awarded the album with four and a half stars out of five, saying: "Singer Dakota Staton's first full-length album was one of her best. She had a hit with "The Late, Late Show" and performed memorable versions of "Broadway," "A Foggy Day," "What Do You See in Her," "My Funny Valentine" and "Moon Ray." Backed by a largely unidentified orchestra arranged by Van Alexander (with Hank Jones on piano), Staton sounds both youthful and mature, displaying a highly appealing voice on a near-classic set." In terms of chart performance, ''The Late, Late Show'' peaked at #4 in the U.S., an unusual feat at a time when jazz records enjoyed more moderate chart action. Roy Alfred
Roy Alfred (May 14, 1916 – 2008) was an American Tin Pan Alley lyricist whose successful songs included "The Hucklebuck", " Rock and Roll Waltz", " Who Can Explain?", and "Let's Lock the Door (And Throw Away the Key)". His first major success as a lyricist was "The Best Man", written with Fred Wise, and a hit for Nat "King" Cole in 1946. In 1949, Alfred wrote the words for "The Hucklebuck", a tune originally written as an instrumental credited to Andy Gibson, which was first recorded by Paul Williams and his Hucklebuckers. The vocal version became a hit for Roy Milton, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and Frank Sinatra in 1949, and was later also successful for Chubby Checker (1960) and in Britain for Coast to Coast (1981). ''Welcome to the Club'' is a 1959 album by Nat King Cole, arranged by Dave Cavanaugh. Cole is accompanied by an uncredited Count Basie Orchestra, without Count Basie himself. ''Welcome to the Club'' was chosen as one of ''Billboard'' magazine's 'Spotlight Winners of the Week' upon its release in February 1959. ''Billboard'' commented that "Cole works out on a group of swinging, jazz-oriented offerings with interesting backings by Dave Cavanaugh...Cole himself, as usual, is fine and somewhat reminiscent of his earlier swinging efforts." The review also noted the similarity of the album's arrangements to Count Basie's, and praised Cole's efforts on the blues tracks, "I Want a Little Girl" and "Wee Baby Blues". ''The Late, Late Breakfast Show'' was a British variety show broadcast live on Saturday evenings from 4 September 1982 to 8 November 1986 on BBC1. It was presented by Noel Edmonds, initially with co-host Leni Harper, and also featured Mike Smith and John Peel. The "Give It a Whirl" segments featured dangerous stunts. Multiple serious injuries resulted from these stunts, including the death of Michael Lush in 1986. The show was cancelled in the aftermath of his death. Overview ''The Late, Late Breakfast Show'' was the first show Noel Edmonds presented in the Saturday-evening variety slot, having quit his Saturday-morning children's show ''Multi-Coloured Swap Shop'' earlier that year.
