The Last Outlaw (1936 Film)
''The Last Outlaw'' is a 1936 American Western film directed by Christy Cabanne from a screenplay by John Twist and Jack Townley. The original story was credited to "E. Murray Campbell" (Evelyne Murray Campbell, who wrote it in 1919) and John Ford, who directed the 1919 version. Harry Carey starred in both versions. The premise has Carey as a notorious outlaw jailed in 1911. Twenty-five years later he is released, and finds that the world has moved on without him. His reputation as the terror of the west has been forgotten, and he has trouble adjusting to life in the city. He joins forces with the sheriff who originally caught him (Henry B. Walthall) to track down the new terror (Tom Tyler). RKO Radio Pictures previewed the film with a running time of 73 minutes. It was edited to 68 minutes, and finally released as a standard "program western" running 62 minutes. In the trade it was considered a " sleeper", with a novel storyline and treatment. Christy Cabanne
William Christy Cabanne (April 16, 1888 – October 15, 1950) was an American film director, screenwriter, and silent film actor. Biography Born in 1888, Cabanne (pronounced CAB-a-nay) started his career on stage as an actor and director. He appeared on-screen in dozens of short films between 1911 and 1915. He gradually became a film director and in fact one of the more prolific directors of his time (see filmography below). He signed on with the Fine Arts Film Company and was employed as an assistant to D.W. Griffith. Miriam Cooper credited him with discovering her as an extra in 1912. Alan Curtis (born Harry Ueberroth or Harold Neberroth, July 24, 1909 – February 2, 1953) was an American film actor who appeared in over 50 films. Early life and career Born Harry Ueberroth or Harold Neberroth in Chicago, he began his career as a model before becoming an actor, appearing in local newspaper ads. William Stanley Blystone (August 1, 1894 – July 16, 1956) was an American film actor who made more than 500 films appearances between 1924 and 1956. He was sometimes billed as William Blystone or William Stanley. Early years Blystone was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was a steel production engineer and worked in ore mines before he became an actor. Maxine Bliss Jennings (March 8, 1909 – January 11, 1991) was an American actress. Early years Jennings was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Phillip Bliss Jennings. Harry Woods (actor)
Harry Lewis Woods (May 5, 1889 – December 28, 1968) was an American film actor. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Woods was a millinery salesman prior to becoming an actor. He appeared in nearly 250 films between 1923 and 1958. During his 35-year film career he acquired a reputation as a screen villain ''par excellence''; his imposing size, powerful build, piercing eyes and snarling voice typed him as a bad guy to be reckoned with. He seldom played ordinary henchmen, usually cast as both the brains (the banker or saloon owner who secretly runs the bandit gang terrorizing the area) and the brawn behind the local villainy. He was well respected by his peers. Another prime screen villain, Roy Barcroft, once said of him, "Everything I know about being a bad guy I learned from Harry Woods."
