The Last Mile (1932 Film)
''The Last Mile'' is a 1932 American pre-Code crime drama film directed by Samuel Bischoff and starring Preston Foster. The picture is based on John Wexley's 1930 Broadway play, ''The Last Mile (play), The Last Mile''. Actor Howard Phillips appeared in both the play and the film but in different roles. In 1959, the play was adapted a second time into a The Last Mile (1959 film), film of the same name starring Mickey Rooney. Plot The movie presents life in a prison where men are on death row. Some of them are wrongfully accused and convicted; there is nothing in their future but the electric chair. Richard Walters is condemned to death for a crime he claims he did not commit. Samuel Bischoff
Samuel Bischoff (August 11, 1890 – May 21, 1975) was an American film producer who was responsible for more than 400 full-length films, two-reel comedies, and serials between 1922 and 1964. Life Born to a Jewish family in Hartford, Connecticut, Bischoff graduated from Boston University, then headed for Hollywood, where he began his career in 1922 by producing comedy shorts including Stan Laurel's ''Mixed Nuts'' (1922). He was the head of Samuel Bischoff Productions, a low-budget production company in the 1930s. He drew the attention of Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn, who hired him to supervise the studio's feature film productions. In 1932, he moved to Warner Bros. and when Hal B. Wallis became production chief after Darryl F. Zanuck left in 1933, Bischoff and Henry Blanke were the main producers at the studio. He returned to Columbia in 1941. John Franklin Sheridan (June 11, 1869 – November 24, 1943) was an American actor of the silent and early sound film eras. Biography Born in Boston, he began acting later in life, at the age of 46, and had several leading roles. As time went on, he segued into the character actor role and continued working right into his 70s. Although mostly in smaller roles, he continued to enjoy featured roles occasionally throughout the 1930s, as in his role of Sam Stubener in the 1936 film ''Conflict'', which starred John Wayne. In 1926, Sheridan married Catherine T. McNulty, who died in 1943. Later that same year, he married Edna M Carroll and they had one child.
