The Larger Bowl (A Pantoum)
"The Larger Bowl" is the fourth track and third single from Rush's 2007 album ''Snakes & Arrows''. Inspiration and lyrical structure The lyrics were written by the drummer and primary lyricist Neil Peart. The title was inspired by a "dysentery dream" he had while touring West Africa on his bicycle in 1988.Neil Peart''The Game of Snakes and Arrows'' (accessed May 19, 2007). Peart's book '' The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa'' includes a chapter entitled "The Larger Bowl" in which he describes the dream. The excerpt in which he mentions the song is as follows: Anyway... a song was playing in the store, a plaintive ballad called "The Larger Bowl." Rush (band)
Rush was a Canadian rock band formed in 1968 in Toronto, that was comprised primarily of Geddy Lee (bass, vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and Neil Peart (drums, percussion, lyricist). The band formed in Toronto in 1968 by Lifeson, drummer John Rutsey, and bass guitarist/vocalist Jeff Jones, who was immediately replaced by Lee. After Lee joined, the band went through several lineup configurations before arriving at its classic power trio lineup with the addition of Peart in July 1974, who replaced Rutsey four months after the release of their 1974 self-titled debut album; this lineup remained intact for the remainder of the band's career. Pottersfield (also spelled "Potter’s Field") was a large historically Black neighborhood located in downtown Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It was originally built over a hundred years ago to be a home for those working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These workers included the stonemasons that constructed the famous stone walls encircling the University’s campus and those that carried water from the Old Well to students in dorms. By the mid 1950s, Pottersfield and its adjacent neighborhood, Sunset, had together come to be known as the Northside neighborhood. Pantoum
The pantoum is a poetic form derived from the pantun, a Malay verse form: specifically from the ''pantun berkait'', a series of interwoven quatrains. Structure The pantoum is a form of poetry similar to a villanelle in that there are repeating lines throughout the poem. It is composed of a series of quatrains; the second and fourth lines of each stanza are repeated as the first and third lines of the next stanza. The pattern continues for any number of stanzas, except for the final stanza, which differs in the repeating pattern. The first and third lines of the last stanza are the second and fourth of the penultimate; the first line of the poem is the last line of the final stanza, and the third line of the first stanza is the second of the final.
