The King And I
''The King and I'' is the fifth musical by the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It is based on Margaret Landon's novel '' Anna and the King of Siam'' (1944), which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical's plot relates the experiences of Anna, a British schoolteacher who is hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the piece, as well as by a love to which neither can admit. The musical premiered on March 29, 1951, at Broadway's St. James Theatre. It ran for nearly three years, making it the fourth-longest-running Broadway musical in history at the time, and has had many tours and revivals. Valerie Hobson
Babette Louisa Valerie Hobson (14 April 1917 – 13 November 1998) was a British actress whose film career spanned the 1930s to the early 1950s. Her second husband was John Profumo, a British government minister who became the subject of the Profumo affair in 1963. Early years Hobson was born at Sandy Bay, Larne, County Antrim, in Ulster. Her father, Robert Gordon Hobson (1877-1940), was a Commander in the Royal Navy, her mother was Violette (c. 1890-1955; née Hamilton-Willoughby). Before she was 11 years old, Hobson had begun to study acting and dancing at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Life and career In 1935, aged 17, she appeared as Baroness Frankenstein in ''Bride of Frankenstein'' with Boris Karloff and Colin Clive. She played opposite Henry Hull that same year in ''Werewolf of London'', the first Hollywood werewolf film. Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru (11 September 1917 – 27 September 2012), known professionally as Herbert Lom (), was a Czech-British actor who moved to the United Kingdom in 1939. In a career lasting more than 60 years, he generally appeared in character roles, often portraying criminals or suave villains in his younger years, and professional men as he aged. Highly versatile, he proved a skilled comic actor in '' The Pink Panther'' franchise, as inspector Dreyfus. Lom was noted for his precise, elegant enunciation of English. Muriel Smith (singer)
Muriel Burrell Smith (February 23, 1923 – September 13, 1985) was an American singer. In the 1940s and 1950s, she was a star of musical theater and opera, and was also the off-film ghost singer in several hit movies. She is perhaps best known in the UK for her 1953 #3 hit single, "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me", which was first covered in 1965 by Mel Carter (and which remains a staple of easy listening and oldies radio to this day) and later in 1994 by Gloria Estefan.
