The Jolly Boys
The Jolly Boys are a mento band from Port Antonio, Jamaica. It was formed in 1945 and had great commercial success in the late 1980s and 1990s among reggae and world music fans. They released a new album in 2010 ''Great Expectation'' and are currently the house band at GeeJam, a hotel in Port Antonio. Early history The Jolly Boys grew out of a group called the Navy Island Swamp Boys that formed on 11 April 1945, and often played at Errol Flynn's parties. This group included Moses Deans on banjo and guitar, Noel Lynch on Guitar and "Papa" Brown on rumba box. After this group split in 1955, Deans and Brown formed The Jolly Boys (a name Errol Flynn is said to have coined) with Derrick "Johnny" Henry on maracas and drum, Martell Brown on guitar, and David "Sonny" Martin on guitar. Mento
Mento is a style of Music of Jamaica, Jamaican folk music that predates and has greatly influenced ska and reggae music. It is a fusion of African rhythmic elements and European elements, which reached peak popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. Mento typically features acoustic instruments, such as classical guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo, hand drums, and the rhumba box — a large mbira in the shape of a box that can be sat on while played. The rhumba box carries the bass (sound), bass part of the music. Mento is often confused with Calypso music, calypso, a musical form from Trinidad and Tobago. Although the two share many similarities, they are separate and distinct musical forms. Rykodisc is an American record label owned by Warner Music Group, operating as a unit of WMG's Independent Label Group and is distributed through Alternative Distribution Alliance. Dale Dizzle Virgo
Dale Dizzle Virgo (born May 23, 1985, born Dale Antou Tonye Ian Virgo, also known as Dizzle), is a record producer, musician, engineer and an entrepreneur. Dale first started producing at age 17 in his home studio in Portmore, Jamaica. He was predominately involved in the Jamaican gospel music fraternity and produced many hit tracks for that industry. In 2005, Virgo signed with Gussie Clarke. In that same year, he did the track Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Rihanna on her début album A Girl Like Me. ''The Mighty Quinn'' is a 1989 American mystery comedy thriller film starring Denzel Washington in the title role, alongside Robert Townsend, James Fox, Mimi Rogers, M.
