The Jailbird
''The Jailbird'' is a 1920 American silent comedy film directed by Lloyd Ingraham and written by Julien Josephson. The film stars Douglas MacLean, Doris May, Louis Morrison, William Courtright, Wilbur Higby, and Otto Hoffman. The film was released on October 10, 1920, by Paramount Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine, Shakespeare Clancy (MacLean), adroit in the art of opening safes, escapes from prison when his term still has six months to run and returns with 'Skeeter' Burns (Morrison), a friend who has just finished his sentence, to Dodson, Kansas, where Shakespeare has inherited a run-down newspaper and some worthless real estate. His first issue of the newspaper antagonizes the people of the town, and he promotes an oil stock scheme to get their money, setting up a well on his property. Lloyd Ingraham
Lloyd Chauncey Ingraham (November 30, 1874 – April 4, 1956) was an American film actor and director. Biography Born in Rochelle, Illinois, Ingraham appeared in more than 280 films between 1912 and 1950, as well as directing more than 100 films between 1913 and 1930. Films for which he is known include ''Scaramouche'' (1923), ''The Padrone's Ward'' (1914) and '' Rainbow Valley'' (1935). He performed in several films with John Wayne including '' Rainbow Valley'' (1935), '' Empty Saddles'' (1936), '' Westward Ho'' (1935), ''The Lonely Trail'' (1936) and ''Conflict'' (1936). He died of pneumonia in the Motion Picture Hospital at Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, aged 82. His remains are buried in Chapel of the Pines Crematory. Joseph Hazelton
Joseph H. Hazelton (c. 1853 – October 6, 1936), aka Joseph Hazleton, was an American stage and film actor. He appeared in 30 films between 1912 and 1922. As a boy program giver at Ford's Theatre, he witnessed the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. Life and career Hazelton debuted on stage as a child when a production at Grover's Theater in Washington, D.C. needed a boy to play a young prince in '' King John''. Thereafter, he continued to stay around the theater, doing odd jobs and handing out programs. In 1910, he was a member of the Columbia Players in Washington, D.C. When the Pasadena Community Playhouse presented ''Our American Cousin'' in 1930, Hazelton spoke during intermission of each performance, relating what he witnessed as he observed the assassination. Edith Yorke
Edith Yorke (born Edith Murgatroyd; 23 December 1867 – 28 July 1934) was an English actress. She appeared in more than 60 films between 1919 and 1933. Biography Yorke was born in Derby; her family later moved to Croydon, Surrey. Edith returned to Derby, where she taught destitute children in a local workhouse. She married Robert Byard and emigrated with him and their children to the United States in 1902, becoming a film actress in her 50s, mainly in supporting roles. Her daughter was a film actress also, and her son became a violinist with a symphony orchestra. Yorke died in Southgate, California, aged 66. Bert Woodruff
William Herbert "Bert" Woodruff (April 29, 1856 – June 14, 1934) was an American actor of the silent era. Woodruff was born in Peoria, Illinois, and was the son of Mrs. Hannah Woodruff. He performed on stage before he began acting on film, debuting in 1876 as part of the Woodruff and West song-and-dance act. His performances included blackface comedy and Irish specialties. In 1882, he became part of the Adelphi Theater stock company in Peoria, where he worked for seven years. In 1898, Woodruff moved into management, opening a vaudeville theater in Peoria and managing it until 1904. From there he went to Redondo Beach, California, where he opened the city's first theater for films. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1916 and 1931.
