The Ivy House
The Ivy House is a Grade II listed public house at 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London. It was designed by the architect A. E. Sewell in the 1930s for Truman's Brewery. It was originally known as the Newlands Tavern, and has many original features including a curved bar and timber panelled walls. It was one of the major pub music venues in South London during the mid-1970s pub rock boom, with acts including Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer and Dr. Feelgood. The pub was later renamed the Stuart Arms, before becoming The Ivy House. It is listed by Southwark London Borough Council as an asset of community value. The Ivy House has been used as a set for many films including the 2015 Kray Brothers biopic Legend. Truman's Brewery
Truman's Brewery was a large East London brewery and one of the largest brewers in the world at the end of the 19th century. Founded around 1666, the Black Eagle Brewery was established on a plot of land next to what is now Brick Lane in London, E1. It grew steadily until the 18th century when, under the management of Benjamin Truman, and driven by the demand for porter, it expanded rapidly and became one of the largest brewers in London. Its growth continued into and through the 19th century with the expansion of its brewery and pub estate. Pub Rock (United Kingdom)
Pub rock is a rock music genre that was developed in the early to mid-1970s in the United Kingdom. A back-to-basics movement which incorporated roots rock, pub rock was a reaction against the expensively-recorded and produced progressive rock and flashy glam rock scenes of the time. Although short-lived, pub rock was live rock played in small traditional venues like pubs and clubs. Since major labels showed no interest in pub rock groups, pub rockers sought out independent record labels such as Stiff Records. Indie labels used relatively inexpensive recording processes, so they had a much lower break-even point for a record than a major label. With pub rock's emphasis on small venues, simple, fairly inexpensive recordings and indie record labels, it was the catalyst for the development of the British punk rock scene. Ian Dury
Ian Robins Dury (12 May 1942 27 March 2000) was a British singer, songwriter and actor who rose to fame during the late 1970s, during the punk and new wave era of rock music. He was the lead singer and lyricist of Ian Dury and the Blockheads and before that of Kilburn and the High Roads. John Graham Mellor (21 August 1952 – 22 December 2002), known professionally as Joe Strummer, was a British singer, musician and songwriter. Goat Girl
Goat Girl is an English post-punk band from South London. Their initial lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Clottie Cream (Lottie Pendlebury), guitarist and occasional lead vocalist L.E.D. (Ellie Rose Davies), bassist Naima Jelly (Naima Bock) and drummer Rosy Bones (Rosy Jones). UK music magazine ''DIY'' describe them as being "imbued with an innate ability to voice the socio-political concerns of their peers with wit and style". In 2019, bassist Holly Hole joined the band, replacing Naima Jelly. Formation and signing to Rough Trade The band played early gigs in The Windmill, Brixton and named themselves after comedian Bill Hicks' character 'Goat Boy'.
