The Ironmaster (novel)
''The Ironmaster'' (original French: ''Le Maître de forges'') is a French novel by Georges Ohnet, published in 1882. A melodrama in a bourgeois setting, ''The Ironmaster'' was adapted for the theater by Ohnet himself the following year. Premiered at the Théâtre du Gymnase Marie Bell, the play became very popular, with more than 271 performances in a few months. An English adaptation by Arthur Wing Pinero was first staged in 1884, and was frequently revived during the following decade.Wearing, J. P. Georges Ohnet
Georges Ohnet (3 April 1848, in Paris – 5 May 1918) was a French novelist. Life and career Ohnet was educated at the Collège Sainte-Barbe and the Lycée Napoléon. After the Franco-Prussian War he became editor of the magazines ''Pays'' and ''Constitutionnel'' in succession. In collaboration with the engineer and dramatist Louis Denayrouze (b. 1848) he produced the play '' Regina Sarpi'', and during 1877 '' Marthe''. Ohnet was an admirer of Georges Sand and was opposed to realistic modern novels. He began a series of novels, '' Les Batailles de la vie'', of a character simple and idealistic, which, although scorned by the critics as unreal and commonplace, were very popular. The Théâtre du Gymnase or Théâtre du Gymnase Marie Bell, is a theatre in Paris, at 38 Boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, 10th arrondissement (métro : Bonne Nouvelle (Paris Métro), Bonne Nouvelle). Arthur Wing Pinero
Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (24 May 185523 November 1934) was an English playwright and, early in his career, actor. Pinero was drawn to the theatre from an early age, and became a professional actor at the age of 19. He gained experience as a supporting actor in British provincial theatres, and from 1876 to 1881 was a member of Henry Irving's company, based at the Lyceum Theatre, London, Lyceum Theatre, London. Pinero wrote his first play in 1877. Seven years later, having written 15 more, three of them highly successful, he abandoned acting and became a full-time playwright. He first became known for a series of farces, of which ''The Magistrate (play), The Magistrate'' (1885) was the longest-running. During the 1890s he turned to serious subjects.
