''The Impossible'' ( ar, المستحيل, translit. ''El Mustahil'') is a 1965 Egyptian drama film starring Nadia Lutfi and directed by Hussein Kamal. The film was selected as the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 38th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Hussein Kamal
Hussein Kamal () (17 August 1932 – 24 March 2003) was an Egyptian television, film and theatre director. He is considered to be an important director of traditional Egyptian cinema. One of his most famous films is ''Chitchat on the Nile'' (1971), a critique of the decadence of Egyptian society during the Nasser era. His 1972 film '' Empire M'' was entered into the 8th Moscow International Film Festival in 1973. Egypt has submitted films for consideration for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1958, when Youssef Chahine's ''Cairo Station'' became both the first African and the first Arab film to contend for the award. The Foreign Film award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The award was created for the 1956 Academy Awards, succeeding the non-competitive Honorary Academy Awards which were presented between 1947 and 1955 to the best foreign language films released in the United States. Egypt has submitted thirty-six films to the Foreign Oscar competition but has never yet achieved a coveted Oscar nomination. This is a list of submissions to the 38th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 38th Academy Awards, fifteen films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Hungary submitted a film to the competition for the first time. The 38th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1965, were held on April 18, 1966, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. They were hosted by Bob Hope. The ceremony was broadcast on the ABC network and was the first to be broadcast live in color.
