The Hour Before The Dawn
''The Hour Before the Dawn'' is a 1944 American drama war film directed by Frank Tuttle starring Franchot Tone and Veronica Lake. It was based on the 1942 novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Plot In 1923 in England, General Hetherton is instructing his grandson Jim to shoot a rifle. Jim's dog runs in the way and Jim accidentally kills him. The incident affects him deeply and he becomes a pacifist. Years later, at the commencement of World War II, Jim is headmaster at a school and has fallen in love with a young Austrian woman, Dora Bruckman, who works for his sister-in-law, May. He is unaware that Dora is a Nazi spy. She meets regularly with her supervisors in London, Mrs. Müller and Kurt van der Breughel, who are posing as Austrian refugees. Jim's brother Roger joins the Royal Air Force, but Jim applies for exemption from fighting. This is granted. Frank Tuttle
Frank Wright Tuttle (August 6, 1892 – January 6, 1963) was a Cinema of the United States, Hollywood film director and writer who directed films from 1922 (''The Cradle Buster'') to 1959 (''Island of Lost Women''). Biography Frank Tuttle was educated at Yale University, where he edited campus humor magazine ''The Yale Record''."Frank Wright Tuttle". After graduation, he worked in New York City in the advertising department of the Metropolitan Music Bureau. Edmund Breon
Edmund Breon (born Iver Edmund de Breon MacLaverty; 12 December 1882 Р24 June 1953) was a Scottish film and stage actor. He appeared in more than 130 films between 1907 and 1952. Life and career Born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Breon began in John Hare's touring company and later played on the West End stage and in Glasgow, gaining prominence. According to his grandson, film editor, Breon "started out at the turn of the century doing silent pictures in France. Vampire movies", so it is reasonably certain that MacLaverty is indeed the actor who appeared under the name Edmond Br̩on in many Gaumont films 1907-1922 including, most famously, playing the part of Inspector Juve for ''Louis Feuillade'' in the ground-breaking ''Fant̫mas'' series.
