The Honorary Consul (film)
''The Honorary Consul'' is a 1983 British drama film directed by John Mackenzie, and starring Michael Caine, Richard Gere, Bob Hoskins and Elpidia Carrillo. It is based on the 1973 novel ''The Honorary Consul'' by Graham Greene. Synopsis Set in a small politically unstable Latin American country, the narrative follows Eduardo Plarr (Richard Gere), a medical doctor of part-English, part-South American descent, who has left his home country to escape political turmoil. He meets an array of people, including the British Consul Charley Fortnum (Michael Caine) who is working to prevent a revolution from occurring. Fortnum is also a remorseful alcoholic. Plarr also meets Fortnum's wife Clara (Elpidia Carrillo) to whom he is immediately attracted. John Mackenzie (film Director)
John Leonard Duncan Mackenzie (22 May 1928 – 8 June 2011) was a Scottish film director who worked in British film from the late 1960s, first as an assistant director and later as an independent director himself. Early life Mackenzie was born in Edinburgh, where he attended Holy Cross Academy. He studied history at the University of Edinburgh. He studied drama and joined Edinburgh's Gateway Theatre Company. He worked as a teacher and moved to London in 1960. Career Early career He began his career with Ken Loach, acting as the latter's assistant director on such works as ''Up the Junction'' (1965) and '' Cathy Come Home'' (1966). Leonard Maguire
Leonard Maguire (26 May 1924 – 12 September 1997) was a British actor, born in England but most renowned in Scotland where he lived for much of his life. Maguire had a long career, beginning in the 1940s. He died in 1997, aged 73, after a lengthy illness. Early life Maguire was born in Manchester, England, to Scottish parents. His father was Thomas Maguire, a former consul in Valparaíso, Chile, who was of Irish descent. Maguire's family moved to Antwerp, Belgium in 1926 before moving to Glasgow, Scotland, in 1932.
