The Home Town Girl
''The Home Town Girl'' is a 1919 American silent film, silent comedy film directed by Robert G. Vignola, written by Oscar Graeve and Edith Kennedy, and starring Vivian Martin, Ralph Graves, Lee Phelps, Carmen Phillips, Stanhope Wheatcroft, and Herbert Standing. It was released on May 11, 1919, by Paramount Pictures. Plot Nell Fanshawe (Martin) has so many suitors that she does not know what to do, and against her parents’ wishes she looks with favor upon John Stanley (Graves), who works in the village drug store. John becomes ambitious and goes to New York City to seek his fortune. He sells some valuable rugs to a wealthy lady and is persuaded by a discharged clerk to try his hand at cards. After he loses all of the firm's money in a poker game, he runs away. Nell goes to the city, obtains work in the same firm, and after she eventually finds John gets his position restored so in the end they find happiness. William Courtright
William Courtright (February 10, 1848 – March 6, 1933) was an American film actor. Early years He was born Theodore Courtright in New Milford, Illinois, and was educated in the public schools of Ione, California. When he was 16, he ran away from home to join a stock theater company. Career Courtright's acting career began with Shakespearean plays, as he worked with Lawrence Barrett. Before entering the film industry, he appeared in minstrel shows. He made a world tour as a minstrel, with the tour's activities including performing before King Edward VII. Sometimes billed as Billy Courtright, he appeared in 68 films between 1912 and 1930. He worked with D. W. Griffith and in his later career at the Hal Roach Studios, where he appeared in several early Laurel and Hardy comedies. Courtright was still acting at age 80. Edythe Chapman (October 8, 1863 – October 15, 1948) was an American stage and silent film actress. Career Born in Rochester, New York, Chapman began her stage career as early as 1898 when she appeared in New York City in ''The Charity Ball''. She performed at the Shubert Theater in Brooklyn in a production of ''The Light Eternal'' in 1907. The play was a romantic drama of Imperial Rome which was supported by a cast of approximately 100 people. Stanhope Nelson Wheatcroft (May 11, 1888 – February 13, 1966) was an American actor of the stage and screen who was primarily active during Hollywood's silent era. Biography Stanhope was born in New York City in 1888 to Nelson Wheatcroft and Adeline Stanhope. Both of his parents were renowned actors and drama teachers born in Europe. Stanhope attended Columbia University in New York City, and reportedly decided to embark upon a career as an actor after his father's death. Broadway plays in which Wheatcroft appeared included ''Marrying Money'' (1914), ''A Gentleman from Mississippi'' (1908), ''The Warrens of Virginia'' (1907), ''The Movers'' (1907), ''Zira'' (1905), and ''Nancy Stair'' (1905).
