The Home Show (Australian TV Series)
''The Home Show'' is an Australian television program which aired on Sydney station TCN-9 for about a year, from 1 November 1956 to 12 November 1957. Originally aired on Thursdays, it later moved to Tuesdays. It was replaced with ''Tuesday at One''. The program, along with its replacement, was aimed at the housewives. Prior to the debut of the program, it had been announced as far back as September. Broadcast live, the hour-long program was hosted by Judy Ann James, who was also a producer on the show. An edition of the magazine ''The Australian Women's Weekly'' from late July 1957 featured an article discussing the hosts of the three main women's programmes on Sydney television, ''Home Show'', ''Your Home'' on (with Del Cartwright) on ATN-7 and '' Women's World'' (with Mary Rossi) on ABN-2 ABN is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's television station in Sydney. TCN-9
TCN is the flagship television station of the Nine Network in Australia. The station is currently located at 1 Denison Street, North Sydney. The licence, issued to a company named Television Corporation Ltd headed by Sir Frank Packer, was one of the first four licences (two in Sydney, two in Melbourne) to be issued for commercial television stations in Australia. TCN-9 is the home of the NRL coverage and national-level Nine News bulletins. History TCN began broadcasting on 16 September 1956, and became the first station in Australia to begin regular transmissions. ''Your Home'' was an early Australian television show that aired on Sydney station ATN-7 from 3 December 1956 to circa 3 September 1964. It was one of the first series produced by the station. Hosted by Del Cartwright, the series was aimed at housewives of the period. Originally broadcast five days a week, it was eventually cut back to four days. Running time was originally thirty minutes but eventually became sixty minutes. Examples of format The episode aired 10 September 1957 featured a demonstration of judo, while Cartwright and Marjorie Long discussed various uses of vegetables. In the episode broadcast 8 October 1957, there was an appearance by the cast of ''Pajama Game'', an interview with choreographer Betty Pounder, and tumbling act by the Flying Garlands. In the 12 November 1957 episode, Cartwright interviewed dancers George and Mavis Weiss, interviewed Cedric Ashton of the Rockdale Opera Company, while someone named Mr. Cordony created a hairstyle for teenagers. ''Women's World'' (also known as ''Woman's World'') was an Australian television series which aired from 1956 to 1963 on ABC. Originally broadcast in Sydney and later Melbourne, it would appear the last couple years (and first few months) of the series were only broadcast in Sydney. Some editions were made (and broadcast live) in Melbourne, but many were made in Sydney, and often telerecorded for Melbourne broadcast (see below). The series was aimed at the housewives. For example, the 6 October 1959 episode was hosted by Joy Wren, featured a segment on cooking problems, a segment on knitwear, and music provided by Freddie Philips, a pianist. The Sydney-produced episode broadcast in Melbourne on 4 November 1959 featured Gwen Plumb as host, a segment on fashions in nylon, a book review and a piano interlude by Marie van Hove. ABN (TV Station)
ABN is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's television station in Sydney. The station began broadcasting on 5 November 1956. Its original studios were located in Gore Hill and were in use up until March 2004, when they were co-located with ABC Radio, Radio Australia, ABC-TV Set Construction and ABC Australia at the Corporation's headquarters in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Its main transmitter, however, remains at Gore Hill. The station can be received throughout the state through a number of relay transmitters, as well as satellite transmission on the Optus Aurora platform.
