Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking (also known as thumbing, autostop or hitching) is a means of transportation that is gained by asking individuals, usually strangers, for a ride in their car or other vehicle. The ride is usually, but not always, free. Nomads have also used hitchhiking as a primary mode of travel for the better part of the last century, and continue to do so today. Signaling methods Hitchhikers use a variety of signals to indicate they need a ride. Indicators can be physical gestures or displays including written signs. Hitchhiker Program
The Hitchhiker Program (HH) was a NASA program established in 1984 and administered by the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The program was designed to allow low-cost and quick reactive experiments to be placed on board the Space Shuttle. The program was discontinued after the Space Shuttle ''Columbia'' disaster of STS-107. Program history NASA's Hitchhiker project began in early 1984. It was created to accommodate small attached payloads in the Space Shuttle payload bay. Hitchhikers were intended for customers whose space activity requires power, data or command services. The first Hitchhiker launched on STS-61-C on January 12, 1986. Called HHG-1, it was mounted to the side of the payload bay and carried three experiments. "The Hitch-Hiker" is a short story by Roald Dahl that was originally published in July 1977 issue of the '' Atlantic Monthly'', and later included in Dahl's short story collection ''The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More''. The story is about a man who picks up a hitch-hiker whilst driving to London. The pick-pocketing of a policeman's notebook during a traffic stop closely follows "Hitch-Hike", a 1960 episode of '' Alfred Hitchcock Presents'' based on a short story by Ed Lacy. It was adapted as the 13th episode of '' Tales of the Unexpected''. Plot summary The narrator is driving to London in his new BMW 1975 car when he picks up a hitchhiker. The narrator always picks up hitchhikers since, in early times, he also used to hitchhike and he knew how difficult it can be. It was first presented on the November 17, 1941, broadcast of ''The Orson Welles Show'' on CBS Radio, featuring a score written and conducted by Bernard Herrmann, Fletcher's first husband. Welles performed ''The Hitch-Hiker'' four times on radio, and the play was adapted for a notable 1960 episode of the television series ''The Twilight Zone''. In the story, a man on a cross country drive repeatedly notices the same hitch-hiker standing along the side of the road. Though the hitch-hiker's appearance is non-threatening, the driver becomes increasingly disturbed upon inexplicably seeing him again and again alongside multiple roads across several states. Hitch hike was a dance craze of the 1960s. It started with the 1962 Marvin Gaye hit "Hitch Hike (song), Hitch Hike" and refueled with the gold disc of Vanity Fare, "Hitchin' a Ride (Vanity Fare song), Hitchin' a Ride" (1969). The dance is extremely simple and is based on the hitchhiking gesture: waving the stuck-out thumb. The classical Motown pattern is three times right thumb to the right over the shoulder, clap hands, three times left thumb to the left over the shoulder, clap hands. All this is accompanied by the shimmy body ripples popular at these times. "Hitch Hike" is a 1962 song by Marvin Gaye, released on the Tamla label. Another song Gaye co-wrote (this time with Clarence Paul and William "Mickey" Stevenson). The single was successful enough to land Gaye his first top forty pop single in 1963 with "Hitch Hike" reaching number thirty on the pop singles chart while reaching number twelve on the R&B singles chart. Background This time instead of confessing to being stubborn, the singer is now hitchhiking on the look out for his girl, whom he feels has run so far that he has to travel "around the world" thinking of places she could have found herself at including St. Louis, "Chicago City Limits" and "L.A." The song sparked a brief dance craze when audience members from ''American Bandstand'' performed the "hitch hike" dance. Marvin performed the song on the show and also did the move onstage. Gary Young (Australian Musician)
Gary Young (born 1947 in New York) is an American-born Australian musician who was a founding member of Australian rock band Daddy Cool in which he played the drums and sang backing vocals. He also played drums with Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons amongst other bands. Young was twice inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame as a member of both Daddy Cool and Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons which were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Biography Rondells Gary Young (drums, vocals) and Wayne Duncan (bass guitar, vocals) were the rhythm section of many bands, particularly instrumental groups, from the early 1960s onwards.
