The Himalayans (band)
The Himalayans (1974–1981) was a Nepali pop rock band based in Hong Kong. The band is best known for their songs such as ''Musu Musu Hasi Deu'' and ''Gajalu le Akhai Chopney''. The band was formed by some Nepali speaking British Gurkha soldiers in 1974 in Hong Kong and was disbanded in 1981, when some of the band members were transferred to a regiment in the UK. Formation The band was formed in 1974. Norden Tenzin Bhutia was enlisted in British Gurkha army in Hong Kong in 1971. There he alongside fellow soldiers form the 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles formed the band in 1974. They started singing with some second hand instruments they had bought in Hong Kong for their band. Bhutia named the band ''The Himalayans'' because although the band members were from different places, Himalayas was the common link between them. The Himalayans were an American rock band active between 1989 and 1991. They are best known for starting the careers of two musicians, Adam Duritz of Counting Crows and Dave Janusko, a successful musician and songwriter. History The Himalayans formed in 1990 consisting of members Adam Duritz (vocals), Dave Janusko (guitar, bass), Dan Jewett (guitar), Marty Jones (bass), Chris Roldan (drums). Duritz and Jones had previously worked together when they recorded on tracks that appeared on the Sordid Humor album ''Light Music for Dying People''. The band recorded an album's worth of material, some of the tracks on that album were produced by future Counting Crows guitarist David Bryson. During this time Duritz and Bryson were performing as an acoustic duo at open mic nights and calling themselves Counting Crows prior to the formation of the full band. Norden Tenzing Bhutia
Norden Tenzing Bhutia was a musician, composer and singer of classic Nepali pop songs like 'Musu Musu Hasi Deu', 'Gajalu le Aakhai Chopne', 'Kaha Timro Mayalu Lai'. In the 70's Bhutia was the vocalist and guitarist of the very popular Nepali ensemble, ''The Himalayans''. Bhutia is credited with transforming Nepali music and heralding a change in musical taste and content. Bhutia was one of the pioneers to introduce rock, pop and blues to Nepali mainstream music. Life and career Bhutia was born in Kolkata on 21 January 1950 and raised in Kurseong (Darjeeling). He joined the British Army in 1971 and after serving as a British Gurkha soldier in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, settled in Aldershot, UK and started his own business. Nepalese rock refers to rock music culture of Nepal and the Nepali-speaking regions in India like Sikkim and northern West Bengal, and some parts of Bhutan and Burma. History The history of rock music in Nepal dates back to the 1970s when there were a few acts influenced by Western bands such as The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and later Led Zeppelin, The Who, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and Bob Marley. The Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR) is a rifle regiment of the British Army, forming part of the Brigade of Gurkhas. The 7th Gurkha Rifles was a rifle regiment of the British Indian Army, before being transferred to the British Army, following India's independence in 1947 and after 1959 designated as the 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles. History Formation Raised at Thayetmyo in Burma in 1902 by Major E Vansittart as the 8th Gurkha Rifles; became the 2nd Battalion, 10th Gurkha Rifles, 1903 and then 7th Gurkha Rifles in 1907. Arun Thapa Magar (born January 1952– 22 July 1999) was a Nepali singer and songwriter. In 2003, according to an international poll conducted by BBC, more than half-a million people from 165 countries voted his composition ''Reetu haruma timi hariyali basant (You are the spring amongst the seasons)'', his most famous romantic song, as the seventh in the world's top 10 most popular songs of all time.
