Elmer Clifton
Elmer Clifton (March 14, 1890 – October 15, 1949) was an American writer, director and actor from the early silent days. A collaborator of D.W. Griffith, he appeared in ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and ''Intolerance'' (1916) before giving up acting in 1917 to concentrate on work behind the camera, with Griffith and Joseph Henabery as his mentors. His first feature-length solo effort as a director was ''The Flame of Youth'' with Jack Mulhall. Clifton honed his talents during the late 1910s, directing vehicles for Mulhall and Herbert Rawlinson at Universal and then for Dorothy Gish for Famous Players-Lasky. Two of his projects with Gish, '' Nobody Home'' and ''Nugget Nell'', featured performances from pre-stardom Rudolph Valentino. Most of this early output has been lost. He was the first filmmaker to discover the talents of Clara Bow, whom he cast in '' Down to the Sea in Ships'', released on March 4, 1923. Mark Fenton (November 11, 1866 – July 29, 1925) was an American stage performer and motion-picture character actor who appeared in at least 80 films between 1914 and 1925. Fenton had considerable experience performing on stage prior to acting in silent films. His early stage work included parts in Charles Frohman's productions. His Broadway credits included ''Twelfth Night'' (1900), ''Mary Stuart'' (1900), ''Marie Antoinette'' (1900), ''The Ladies' Battle'' (1900), ''Macbeth'' (1900), ''Much Ado About Nothing'' (1900), and ''Francesca da Rimini'' (1901). Waldemar Young (July 1, 1878 – August 30, 1938) was an American screenwriter. He wrote for more than 80 films between 1917 and 1938. Biography He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and died in Hollywood, California from pneumonia. Waldemar was a grandson of Brigham Young. He was also a brother of Mahonri Young. Young joined the staff of the '' Salt Lake Herald'' after he graduated from high school. He then went to Stanford University starting in 1900. At Stanford, he played on the football team. He majored in English but also studied economics and history. Young did not finish his studies at Stanford. Instead, he took jobs with the ''San Francisco Chronicle'' and the ''San Francisco Examiner''. In 1912, Young married Elizabeth Haight, who was a great-niece of the early California Mormon leader, Sam Brannan.
