''The Heart of Humanity'' is a 1918 American silent war propaganda film produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Allen Holubar. The film stars Dorothy Phillips, William Stowell, and Erich von Stroheim. Overview The film "follows the general theme and construction of the D. W. Griffith film ''Hearts of the World'' and, in places, parallels tsplot". The film was made toward the end of World War I and is known for showcasing von Stroheim as a lecherous ' Hun'. Allen Holubar
Allen Holubar (August 3, 1890 – November 20, 1923) was an American actor, film director, and screenwriter of the silent film era. He appeared in 38 films between 1913 and 1917. He also directed 33 films between 1916 and 1923. Career Allen Holubar started out as an actor on the stage where he met his wife Dorothy Phillips in the Chicago production of ''Every Woman''. While she turned to the screen and continued to act he became a director and even produced. Encouraged by these successes, together they formed the Allen Holubar Production Company in 1920. His 1918 film ''The Heart of Humanity'' was exhibited at Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Modern Art in 2014. Marriage and death Holubar was married to actress Dorothy Phillips for eleven years from 1912 until his death in 1923 from pneumonia, following surgery, at the age of 33. George Hackathorne
George Hackathorne (February 13, 1896 – June 25, 1940) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 50 films between 1916 and 1939. Hackathorne was born and educated in Pendleton, Oregon. Despite his mother's wishes that he get a college education, he chose to be an actor. He began his career as a child actor in stock theater, after which he performed in vaudeville. He and his brother had a dramatic act that toured the United States. On June 25, 1940, Hackathorne died in Hollywood, California, at age 44. He was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Tom London (born Leonard T. Clapman; August 24, 1889 – December 5, 1963) was an American actor who played frequently in B-Westerns. According to ''The Guinness Book of Movie Records'', London is credited with appearing in the most films in the history of Hollywood, according to the 2001 book ''Film Facts'', which says that the performer who played in the most films was "Tom London, who made his first of over 2,000 appearances in '' The Great Train Robbery, 1903''. Gloria Joy (born Corrine Louise Johnson; October 7, 1910 – January 25, 1970) was an American actress whose career began at age seven in 1918 during the silent film era. She mostly performed as a child actress from the late 1910s, through the 1920s, before retiring from the industry in 1934. Early life and career Gloria Joy was born Corrine Louise Johnson in Los Angeles, California to Oral Lavon and Louise Corinne ( Gordon) Johnson. She began her career in the film industry at age seven when her stepfather, Sherwood MacDonald, formed Mission Productions in the autumn of 1918 to produce a series of films showcasing Joy as a child actress. The first of the series was ''The Fortunes of Connie'', released by Pathé on 22 December of that year.
