Curt Courant (11 May 1899 – 20 April 1968) was a German cinematographer who worked on over a hundred films during the silent and early sound eras. Courant worked in several European countries, collaborating with figures such as Alfred Hitchcock and Fritz Lang. As he was of Jewish ancestry, Courant was forced to leave Germany in 1933 and go into exile following the Nazi takeover of power. A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Originally from Brussels she moved to Germany at a young age, and began working in the German film industry before the First World War after having been discovered in Berlin by Oskar Messter. Rose Liechtenstein (26 March 1887 – 22 December 1955) was a German theater and film actress during the silent film era. She was also credited as Rose Lichtenstein. Life Rose Liechtenstein was born in West Prussia in 1887. She received training at the Marie Seebach School before going to Meiningen in 1909 where her career has started.
