''The Headbangers Ball'' is the fourth extended play by American electronic music duo Slander. Canadian independent electronic label Monstercat released the EP on November 29, 2018. The extended play was released with three singles, a North American tour and later gathered generally positive reviews. Background and release The initial concept of ''The'' ''Headbangers Ball'' came to be during Slander's residency in Las Vegas, thinking of it as a "mansion party set in the '' Great Gatsby'' era but with undead skeletons as our attendees." In an interview with '' Billboard Dance'', the duo spoke about the concept and influences about the extended play, stating: To promote the release of ''The Headbangers Ball'', the extended play's three songs were released as singles. Slander (DJs)
Slander (stylized as SLANDER) is an American DJ duo consisting of Derek Andersen and Scott Land based in Los Angeles. They are best known for their unique sound and subgenre "heaven trap". They attribute most of their success to their close friend Nathaniel Bates, who they say “single handedly gave them the inspiration and confidence to become full time DJ’s”. Early life Andersen and Land met at their fraternity, Kappa Sigma, in University of California, Irvine. They later went to and graduated from Icon Collective, a music production school together with Nghtmre. Andersen said: "My relationship with Tyler (Nghtmre) came out of nowhere when we were put in the same classroom at Icon Collective together." Monstercat (formerly known as Monstercat Media) is a Canadian independent electronic music record label based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Founded in 2011 by Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen, the label released music on a tri-weekly basis until 2018, when this was changed to four releases a week. This would later be changed to six releases a week in 2021. Beginning with the release of its first compilation album, ''Monstercat 001 – Launch Week'', the label releases regular compilation albums featuring music from various artists. Until the release of ''Monstercat 030 – Finale'' in 2017, each compilation was given a name and depicted the story of the aforementioned mascot in the album cover. ''Headbangers Ball'' is a music television program that consisted of heavy metal music videos airing on MTV and its global affiliates. The show began on MTV on April 18, 1987, playing heavy metal music videos from both well-known and more obscure artists. The show offered (and became famous because of) a stark contrast to Top 40 music videos shown during the day. However, with the mainstream rise of alternative rock, grunge, pop punk and rap music in the 1990s, the relevance of ''Headbangers Ball'' came into question, and the show was ultimately canceled in 1995. Over eight years later, as new genres of heavy metal were gaining a commercial foothold and fan interest became unavoidable, the program was reintroduced on MTV2.
