Minuit (band)
Minuit ''(pronounced min-wee, French for midnight)'' were an electronic band from New Zealand, formed in Nelson. The members of Minuit include lead singer, Ruth Carr, with Paul Dodge (also known as Gimme a C!) and Ryan Beehre (also known as Funk'n'SloCuts) playing machines. Early work Minuit began as a guitar band with lead vocalist, Ruth Carr, on drums. Ryan Beehre bought a sampler and turned the band electronic, replacing the need for a drummer and putting Ruth out front as vocalist. The band released four self-released EPs, '' Sonic Experience'' (1998), ''Silver'' (1999), ''Luck'' (2000) and ''Except You'' (2002). The 88 In 2003 Minuit signed to Tardus music and released their debut album, ''The 88''. Some of the songs had already been released on their earlier EPs. ''The 88'' achieved gold certification in New Zealand. Minuit first came to prominence in 2002 when their first single "Species II" was used in the intro to the New Zealand TV show ''Queer Nation''. Breakbeat
Breakbeat is a broad type of electronic music that tends to use drum breaks sampled from early recordings of funk, jazz, and R&B. Breakbeats have been used in styles such as hip hop, jungle, drum and bass, big beat, breakbeat hardcore, and UK garage styles (including 2-step, breakstep and dubstep). Etymology The origin of the word "breakbeat" is the fact that the drum loops that were sampled occurred during a "break" in the music - for example the '' Amen break'' (a drum solo from " Amen, Brother" by The Winstons) or the '' Think Break'' (from "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins). History 1970s—1980s: Classic breaks and hip hop production Beginning in 1973 and continuing through the late 1970s and early 1980s, hip hop turntablists, such as DJ Kool Herc began using several funk breaks in a row, using drum breaks from jazz-funk tracks such as James Brown's "Funky Drummer" and The Winstons' "Amen Brother", to form the rhythmic base for hip hop songs. DJ Kool Herc's breaks st ...

The Guards Themselves
''The Guards Themselves'' is an album by New Zealand band, Minuit, that was supposed to be released during early 2005. However, during the production of "The Guards Themselves", lead singer Ruth Carr's left vocal cord was paralysed which delayed the production, and therefore, release of this album to 2006. According to specialists it was unsure if Ruth would ever be able to sing again. However Ruth managed to recover fully a year later and the production for "The Guards Themselves" was able to continue. Lyrically and musically this is a much more sinister affair than their debut. As well as the hard dance of elements that featured on ''The 88'' there is also evidence of a more "rock" influence on "The Guards Themselves" opposed to The 88. According to Paul Dodge, ''It sounds bigger and fuller and a little bit harder and it has a lot more depth to it''. He goes on to compare Minuit to a teenager, saying it's growing older. ''The Guards Themselves'' was mastered by Emily Lazar a ...
