The Guess Who are a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1965. The band originated in 1962 and achieved an international hit single with a cover of "Shakin' All Over" in 1965 under the name Chad Allan and the Expressions. After changing their name to The Guess Who, they found their greatest success in the late 60s and early 70s, under the leadership of singer/keyboardist Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman, with hit songs including "American Woman", "These Eyes", " No Time" and many others. Canned Wheat
''Canned Wheat'' is the fifth studio album by Canadian rock band the Guess Who, released in September 1969. It peaked at number 91 on the ''Billboard'' Pop Albums chart. Two of the band's hits were taken from the album: "Laughing" and "Undun". The album also includes a version of " No Time" which would later be re-recorded for their ''American Woman'' album and released as a single. The album is regarded as a rock classic. Production The band was sent to record the follow-up to '' Wheatfield Soul'' at RCA Studios in New York City. As per company policy at the time, RCA recording artists were required to use the company's own studios. ''Wheatfield Soul'' was cut independently and before the band signed with RCA. The band and their producer Jack Richardson felt that the sound at RCA was inferior to that of the independent A&R Studios, where ''Wheatfield Soul'' was recorded. ''The Best of The Guess Who'' is the fourth compilation album by the Canadian group The Guess Who. It was originally released by RCA Records in April 1971 and contains recordings made between 1968 and 1970. The album reached number 12 on the ''Billboard'' top LPs chart in the United States. A follow up, '' The Best of The Guess Who Volume II,'' was released in 1973. Release history Some of the songs on this album are edited single versions. For example, the single version of "American Woman", which is missing the acoustic introduction, is used. Conversely, while the single version of " Hang On to Your Life" did not include the spoken excerpt from Psalm 22 at the end, the original album version with the spoken outro was used for this compilation. In addition to the usual 2-channel stereo version, the album was also released by RCA in a 4-channel quadraphonic version on 8-track tape and reel-to-reel. Ready Records
Ready Records was a small but influential independent record label based out of Toronto, Canada that signed a number of new wave and indie rock bands from the early to mid-1980s. Focusing primarily on local Toronto-area talent, it released 7" and 12" singles, LPs, and cassettes. Founded in 1979 by Angus MacKay and Andy Crosbie, the label existed between 1979 and 1985, when it folded. Its best selling group was the Spoons, but other acts that had minor hits or received national attention included Blue Peter, Colin Linden, and Manteca. As part of their 20th Century Masters series, Universal released two collections entitled ''Best of Ready Vol. 1'' and ''Best of Ready Vol. 2''. ''Live at the Paramount'' is a live album released by Canadian rock group The Guess Who in 1972. It was recorded on May 22, 1972 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington. ''Live at the Paramount'' was the first Guess Who album to feature Donnie McDougall on rhythm guitar and the last to feature original bassist Jim Kale. It also includes performances of 3 exclusive songs not included on any of their studio albums: "Glace Bay Blues," "Runnin' Back to Saskatoon," and "Truckin' Off Across the Sky." The album reached #39 on the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart in the United States. This was the group's only live album until the 'classic lineup' reunion in 1983 (resulting in the album ''Together Again'', released the following year). Aquarius Records (Canada)
Aquarius Records is an independent record label based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. History Aquarius Records was founded in 1969. The first president was Terry Flood and the other founding owners were Donald Tarlton, Bob Lemm, Dan Lazare and Jack Lazare. The label was initially distributed by London Records of Canada. Among the first acts signed to the label was the Halifax band April Wine, who had also worked with Much Productions. Other artists developed by Aquarius during their first decade included Montreal's Walter Rossi and a rock band from Windsor, Ontario called Teaze. While still with London, Aquarius released records by Mashmakhan, Freedom North, Ross Holloway, Roger Doucet, The Rabble and others. In 1978 Aquarius Records changed distribution to Capitol-EMI and it was early in this association that April Wine began achieving international success. This number series includes both a live album and best-of compilation, but not the band's early recordings (prior to 1969) which were not recorded for RCA. The quad LP version was released using the Quadradisc system. The 2012 reissue by Iconoclassic marked the first time the album was made available on CD in the United States.
