The Grump
''The Grump'' ( fi, Mielensäpahoittaja) is a 2014 Finnish comedy film directed by Dome Karukoski, in which the main character is The Grump, a cranky old man, created by the Finnish author Tuomas Kyrö. ''The Grump'' was selected to compete for the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. It is based on a 2014 novel by Kyrö, the third volume by the author, in which this character appears. The film stars Antti Litja as Mielensäpahoittaja a.k.a. the Grump, Petra Frey, Mari Perankoski, and Iikka Forss. Dome Karukoski
Thomas "Dome" August George Karukoski (; born 29 December 1976) is a Finnish film director. He is considered to be one of Finland's most successful film directors, having won over 30 festival awards and having directed six feature films that became blockbusters in his home country and also received international recognition. Career in films In 1999, Karukoski was one of only 3 new students admitted to the University of Art and Design Helsinki to major in directing; he had had no former experience in directing or holding a camera. Beauty and the Bastard Karukoski's debut feature ''Beauty and the Bastard'' (''Tyttö sinä olet tähti'') showed at the Berlin International Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival in 2006. The film, which stars Pamela Tola, concerns young people in Finland who are caught between conventional careers and more alternative forms of living. Markus Selin (born 16 March 1960) is a Finnish television and film producer. Career Selin was born in Vihti. His first feature was conceived in the mid-1980s. At a party in Los Angeles, he was introduced to fellow Finn Renny Harlin. The two collaborated on a script about three Americans vacationing in Finland who cross the border into the Soviet Union. They approached Chuck Norris to star and he initially agreed but later had to pull out after the production was delayed due to financing problems. His son Mike Norris took over the lead. Selin and Harlin funded the first part of production themselves and then shopped around with the resulting 20-minute demo reel. Selin was eventually able to secure co-production financing from the U.S. for what became the most expensive film ever produced in Finland.
