The Groundhogs
Groundhogs are an English blues and rock band founded in late 1963, that toured extensively in the 1960s, achieved prominence in the early 1970s, and continued sporadically into the 21st century. Tony McPhee (guitar and vocals) is the sole constant member of the group, which has gone through many personnel changes, but usually records and performs as a power trio. Career The band was originally formed as the Dollar Bills in New Cross, London, in 1962 by brothers Pete and John Cruickshank (born in 1943 and 1945 respectively in Calcutta, West Bengal, India). Tony McPhee (born 22 March 1944), the lead guitarist in the instrumental group the Seneschals, joined the group later that year. McPhee steered them towards the blues and renamed them after a John Lee Hooker song, "Groundhog's Blues". The Sir George Robey
The Sir George Robey was a mid-19th century public house and later a music venue on Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park, North London, England. It was named in honour of the music hall performer Sir George Robey (1869–1954) in 1968. The pub was a Meux's house, and was noted for a plaque advertising their Original London Stout, which remained on the building until its demise, long after the brewery's closure in 1921. During its time as a music venue, artists who performed at the Sir George Robey include Bad Manners, Billy Bragg, Carter USM, Desmond Dekker, Fairport Convention, Gong, Hawkwind, Bert Jansch, Roy Harper, Ralph McTell, They Might Be Giants, Fugazi and Tunnelmen. Blur's Damon Albarn recalled: Live albums recorded at the venue include Steve Marriott's Packet of Three's ''Live at the Sir George Robey 23-10-85''. ''The Encyclopedia of Popular Music'' is an encyclopedia created in 1989 by Colin Larkin. UK Albums Chart
The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and (from March 2015) audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on UKChartsPlus as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. However, even though number 100 was classed as a hit album (as in the case of The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums) in the 1980s until January 1989, since the compilations were removed this definition was changed to Top 75 with follow-up books such as The Virgin Book of British Hit Albums book only including this data. In the music industry, the Top 40 is the current, 40 most-popular songs in a particular genre. It is the best-selling or most frequently broadcast popular music. Record charts have traditionally consisted of a total of 40 songs. "Top 40" or " contemporary hit radio" is also a radio format. ''Who Will Save the World? The Mighty Groundhogs'' is a 1972 album recorded by The Groundhogs, originally released by United Artists Records in 1972, catalogue number UAS-5570. The most recent CD reissue is that of 2003 by EMI Records, catalogue number 07243-584815-2-5. The sleeve artwork takes the form of a comic book featuring the Groundhogs depicted as superheroes, drawn by comic book artist Neal Adams. In the story they fight the personified evils of Over-Population, Pollution, War, "Pig Business" and "Sacred Cow" (Religion), and the Junkie Monkey. Each of the band members takes on a different evil thwarting them to begin with only to have them spin off and wreak havoc on another portion of the globe. The lyrics of each song deal with these themes and despite the comic-book nature of the cover, the lyrics are quite serious being politically and socially motivated. ''Split'' is a 1971 blues rock studio album recorded by UK blues-rock group Groundhogs, originally released by Liberty Records in 1971 with catalogue number LBG 83401. It was reissued on CD reissue in 2003 by Liberty / EMI Records, with catalogue number 07243-584819-2-1. In September 2020 it was released on limited-edition red vinyl (as well as CD) from Fire Records, including a second disc containing a number of outtakes and new sleeve notes by Dave Henderson of Mojo Magazine. According to Tony McPhee's sleeve notes for the 2003 CD reissue, the lyrics for ''Split'' were inspired by a panic attack he experienced in May 1970, and the studio version of "Cherry Red" was recorded live in a single take. ''Thank Christ for the Bomb'' is the third studio album recorded by The Groundhogs, originally released by Liberty Records in 1970. It was engineered by Martin Birch, who had previously worked on albums by Deep Purple, Jeff Beck, Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green. It entered the UK ''Melody Maker'' album charts at number 27 on 20 June 1970, and had a total of 3 entries in that chart. The album is a concept album, or to be exact, has two concepts. Side 1 (tracks 1-4) addresses what McPhee termed "alienness" while side 2 is, according to the sleeve notes, "the story of a man who lived in Chelsea all his life; first in a mansion then on the benches of the embankment". Eric Patrick Clapton (born 1945) is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is often regarded as one of the most successful and influential guitarists in rock music. William Thomas "Champion Jack" Dupree (July 23, 1909 or July 4, 1910 – January 21, 1992) was an American blues and boogie-woogie pianist and singer.
