''The Grip of Evil'' is a lost 1916 American silent film serial directed by W.A.S. Douglas and Harry Harvey. It was distributed through Pathé Exchange. Harry Harvey (Medal Of Honor, 1901)
Harry Harvey (June 4, 1873 – April 5, 1929) was a United States Marine who was awarded the United States highest honor, the Medal of Honor for "meritorious conduct" during the Philippine–American War. Biography Harvey was born in New York City. He joined the Marine Corps from Brooklyn in February 1898, and was honorably discharged 5 years later. Jackie Saunders
Jackie Saunders (born Anna Jackal; October 6, 1892 – July 14, 1954) was an American silent screen actress who was one of the major players and stars of Balboa Films. Early years She was born Anna Jackal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Career Before joining Balboa in 1914 at age 21, she had been a model and Orpheum Stock Company theater player. She starred in many of Balboa's films during its existence as a film-producing company. In the 1920s and after Balboa folded, she appeared in productions produced by William Fox, Metro Pictures, Lewis J. Selznick, Thomas H. Ince and B. P. Schulberg. Films that Saunders made for Mutual achieved enough success in Australia that in 1919 a group of businessmen from that country tried to persuade her to make films there. Gordon Sackville (born 1880 - August 6, 1926) was a film actor. Earlier in his career he appeared on stage. He was part of several Hobart Bosworth productions. Charles Dudley (October 1, 1883 - March 9, 1952) was an American stage and silent film actor who later had a successful career as a film studio make-up artist. Early life Charles Dudley Heaslip was born on October 1, 1883, at Fort Grant, Arizona, the son of Irving Heaslip, a career soldier. His father was from St. Ann’s, Ontario, Canada, and served over twenty-five years in the U.S. Army, seeing action at the Battle of Little Big Horn and later in the Philippine War of Independence. Nothing here is known of Dudley’s mother other than she may have died young. Career Before Dudley broke into film at around the age of thirty, he spent some twelve years performing on stage in comic and grand operas. His initial film work was under Milton H. Faroney, with Universal and later with such studios as Monopol, Keystone, Balboa and Vitagraph. Roland Bottomley (1880-1947) was a British born American stage and film actor from Liverpool, England. Some sources have him born in 1878 and others in 1879.''American and British Theatrical Biography'', p.125 c.1979 by J. P. Wearing .. He came to America circa 1913 and settled in California. He first made movies for the Kalem Company. By the 1920s he acted at Paramount, Fox, Universal and for Thomas H. Ince. Balboa Amusement Producing Company
The Balboa Amusement Producing Company (also known as Balboa Studios) was a film production company in Long Beach, California, from 1913 to 1918 that produced more than 1000 films, around 90% of which have been lost film, lost. Some of the notable silent film stars who worked at the studios during this time are Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. Charlie Chaplin also made three visits to the studios to visit Arbuckle's film shoots and to study studio management for his newly formed United Artists company.
