The Griffin, Monmouth
The Griffin is a former public house in Whitecross Street, Monmouth, Whitecross Street, Monmouth, Wales. The building dates from the 18th century and has been grade II listed since 2005. Its name and pub sign, sign refer to the legendary creature, the griffin. In the 18th century the pub was called ''The Old Griffin''. It was rebuilt in the 1830s and refurbished in the 1990s. The building is situated on the corner of Whitecross Street and St Mary's Street, which were both main thoroughfares for the town until the mid 18th century. Monmouth ( , ; cy, Trefynwy meaning "town on the Monnow") is a town and community in Wales. It is situated where the River Monnow joins the River Wye, from the Wales–England border. Monmouth is northeast of Cardiff, and west of London. It is within the Monmouthshire local authority, and the parliamentary constituency of Monmouth. Whitecross Street, Monmouth
Whitecross Street is a historic street in the town centre of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It was in existence by the 15th century, and appears as ''Whit crose'' on the 1610 map of the town by cartographer John Speed. It runs in an east-west direction, between Church Street and St James Square. It has been suggested that the street takes its name from a plague cross. Whitecross Street is lined with numerous listed buildings. History and location Like several other streets in Monmouth, Whitecross Street is believed to have been laid out and named by the middle of the 15th century. Keith Kissack
Keith Edward Kissack MBE (18 November 1913 – 31 March 2010) was a British schoolteacher and historian. He is notable for his many publications on the history of Monmouth and Monmouthshire. Life Kissack was born in Clun, Shropshire, to Rev. Bernard Kebble Kissack and Caroline Keith-Murray. His mother was a descendant of the Murray of Blackbarony family of Scotland, Edmund Murray Dodd, a leading figure in Nova Scotia in the mid 19th Century, and David Mathews, the Mayor of New York City under the British during the American Revolution. Kissack attended Durham School where he was a member of the school cricket team in 1931 and 1932. He later attended St Mark and St John's College, Chelsea, where he trained as a teacher. He married Audrey Winifred Jones, of Monmouth in 1939, and daughter Bethia was born in 1940.
