The Greens (Israel)
The Greens ( he, הַיְּרוּקִים, HaYerukim) is a minor political party in Israel that emphasizes environment protection and quality of life. It was founded and formerly headed by Pe'er Visner. Although the party was never represented in the Knesset, it holds seats in many municipalities across Israel. History The Greens were established in 1997. In the 1999 Knesset elections the party received 0.4% of the vote, failing to win a seat. They received the same share of the vote in the 2003 elections. In the 2006 elections, the party received 47,595 votes (1.52%). However, it was not enough to pass the 2% threshold, and they were ultimately the largest party not to obtain seats in the Knesset ( Balad, with 72,066 votes, was the smallest party to obtain seats). Pe'er Visner
Pe'er Visner ( he, פאר ויסנר; born 1957) is an Israeli politician who was deputy mayor of Tel Aviv and chair of the The Greens (Israel), Israeli Green Party. Political career Visner strongly opposed a 2006 resolution by the Green Party (United States), United States Green Party calling for Disinvestment from Israel, divestment from Israel. Visner wrote, "We are very disappointed that our sister party in the US did not consult with the Israel Green Party before passing this resolution. We hope that this breach in trust between our entities will be remedied with an apology and appropriate action by the US Greens." Visner unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Tel Aviv in both the 2003 Tel Aviv mayoral election, 2003 and 2008 Tel Aviv mayoral election, 2008 mayoral elections. 2015 Israeli Legislative Election
Early elections for the twentieth Knesset were held in Israel on 17 March 2015. Disagreements within the governing coalition, particularly over the budget and a "Jewish state" proposal, led to the dissolution of the government in December 2014. The Labor Party and Hatnuah formed a coalition, called Zionist Union, with the hope of defeating the Likud party, which had led the previous governing coalition along with Yisrael Beiteinu, Yesh Atid, The Jewish Home, and Hatnuah. 2013 Israeli Legislative Election
Early elections for the nineteenth Knesset were held in Israel on 22 January 2013. Public debate over the Tal Law had nearly led to early elections in 2012, but they were aborted at the last moment after Kadima briefly joined the government. The elections were later called in early October 2012 after failure to agree on the budget for the 2013 fiscal year. Meimad
Meimad ( he, מימד, an acronym for ''Medina Yehudit, Medina Demokratit'' (), lit., ''Jewish State, Democratic State'') is a moderate to left-wing religious Zionist political party in Israel. Founded in 1999, it is based on the ideology of the Meimad movement founded in 1988 by Rabbi Yehuda Amital. It was formed by religious Zionists who supported the peace process and believed the National Religious Party had drifted too far to the right. At the national level, it was in alliance with the Labour Party, and until the 2006 election, received the 10th spot on the Labour Knesset list. Yona Yahav
Yona Yahav ( he, יונה יהב, born 19 June 1944) is an Israeli lawyer and politician. He was formerly a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party. Yahav was the mayor of Haifa between 2003 and 2018. In the 2018 Haifa mayoral election, he lost to Einat Kalisch-Rotem. Biography Yahav was born in Haifa during the period of the Mandate era. During his national service he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Military Police Corps of the IDF.
