The Great Victory
''The Great Victory'' or ''The Great Victory, Wilson or the Kaiser? The Fall of the Hohenzollerns'' is a 1919 American silent war drama film directed by Charles Miller and starring Creighton Hale, Florence Billings and Helen Ferguson.Balogh p.189 It was made as anti-German propaganda during World War I, although it was released after the end of the conflict. Synopsis A young Alsatian is forced to enlist in the German Army on the outbreak of the war. Appalled by the atrocities committed by his colleagues, including against his own sister, he deserts having fallen in love with an American nurse. Vowing revenge, he travels to the United States and joins the American Army along with other Alsatians. They return to Europe and secure victory. Henry Otto
Henry Otto (August 8, 1877 – August 3, 1952) was an American silent film actor, director, producer, and screenwriter. Otto contributed to over 150 films throughout his career working as an actor and a director throughout. He directed many films in 1914, in films such as ''When a Woman Waits'', ''In Tune (film), In Tune'', ''The Archeologist'', and ''The Redemption of a Pal'' working with actors such as Edward Coxen, Charlotte Burton and George Field (actor), George Field. He retired from film in 1942. Otto was found dead on August 4, 1952, in Los Angeles. Karl Dane
Karl Dane (born Rasmus Karl Therkelsen Gottlieb, 12 October 1886 – 14 April 1934) was a Danish-American comedian and actor known for his work in American films, mainly of the silent film era. He became a star after portraying “Slim”, a supporting role in one of the most successful silent films of all time, ''The Big Parade'' (1925), directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert. After signing with MGM in 1926, he appeared in supporting roles in several popular silent films before teaming up with George K. Arthur to form the successful comedy duo Dane & Arthur. They appeared in a number of very successful silent comedy features. When sound films arrived, they made short-subject comedies and toured in vaudeville. Fanny Cogan (1866 – May 18, 1929) was a stage and film actress of the silent movie era from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cogan appeared on stage in ''The Bohemian Girl''. She later went into movies. Her screen credits number five. Florence Short
Florence Short (May 19, 1893 – July 10, 1946) was an American actress. She had numerous film roles as a supporting actress and was also cast in theatrical productions. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and moved with her family to New York City as a child, where she attended the Finch School for Girls. She made her professional stage debut in 1910 with the Avenue Stock Company of Wilmington, Delaware. She had early Braodway appearances in Thompson Buchanan's ''The Bridal Path'' and George V. Earl O. Schenck (13 May 1889 – 1962) was an American film actor. He appeared in 41 films between 1916 and 1946. Career After playing leading roles on Broadway and in Hollywood during the Silent era opposite such stars as Mae Murray, Mae Marsh, Norma Talmadge, Alia Nazimova and Marion Davies, Schenck developed "Klieg light eyes". Threatened with total blindness, he interrupted a distinguished stage career and went to Hawaii to rest. In the South Seas he found a new career as an explorer and ethnologist. He secured a roving commission from the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, the leading museum in the world in Polynesian research, to make miniatures and gather artifacts of various Polynesian Islands and spent fourteen years traveling from island to island. Joseph Kilgour
Joseph Kilgour (11 July 1863 – 21 April 1933) was a Canadian actor of the silent film era. He was a well-known veteran stage actor in Broadway theatre before entering silent films. He appeared in more than 50 films between 1909 and 1926. Kilgour was born in Ayr, Ontario, Canada to Joseph Kilgour Sr. and Mary Anderson, who married 29 September 1856. Kilgour was one of seven children of the general store owner. Kilgour left Ayr and moved to the United States to pursue his acting career. Kilgour retired from acting and died in Long Island, New York in 1933. Joseph Henry Kolker (November 13, 1874 ome sources 1870– July 15, 1947) was an American stage and film actor and director. Early years Kolker was born in Quincy, Illinois. Career Kolker, like fellow actors Richard Bennett and Robert Warwick, had a substantial stage career before entering silent films. He began acting professionally in stock theater in 1895. On stage he appeared opposite actresses such as Edith Wynne Matthison, Bertha Kalich and Ruth Chatterton. Kolker began acting in films in 1915. Frank Currier (September 4, 1857 – April 22, 1928) was an American film and stage actor and director of the silent era. Career Similar to Theodore Roberts, Kate Lester, Ida Waterman, and William H. Crane, Currier had a long and successful stage career in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. His youth was spent honing his stagecraft. By the time he started appearing in silent films he was in his 50s and middle-aged. Currier, like Roberts, had a distinctive grandfatherly look as he aged and was respected and beloved by film audiences. Currier appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1928.
