The Grand Passion
''The Grand Passion'' is a 1918 American silent Western film directed by Ida May Park and starring Dorothy Phillips, Jack Mulhall, and Lon Chaney. Ida May Park also wrote the screenplay, based on a novel ''The Boss of Powderville'' by Thomas Addison. The film was allegedly shown in some theaters under the title of ''The Boss of Powderville''. Ida May Park
Ida May Park (December 28, 1879 – June 13, 1954) was an American screenwriter and film director of the silent era, in the early 20th century. She wrote for more than 50 films between 1914 and 1930, and directed 14 films between 1917 and 1920. She was born and died in Los Angeles, California. She was married to film director and producer Joseph De Grasse, with whom she was regularly teamed at Universal. Early career Park got her start in the entertainment industry as a stage actress when she was 15 years old. During her time in the theatre she met her future husband, Joseph De Grasse, also an actor. When Pathé hired De Grasse in 1909, Park was hired as a writer. Together they were hired by Universal. Evelyn Selbie
Evelyn Selbie (July 6, 1871 – December 7, 1950) was an American stage actress and performer in both silent and sound films. Biography Born in Louisville, Kentucky, as a young woman Selbie was a sidesaddle rider. She had a career which lasted twenty-five years on the stage. She began in Proctor's stock companies in New York after leaving her home. She acted in plays like ''Human Hearts'' and '' The Cat and the Canary''. In the former production she starred for two seasons. Selbie also acted in the stock theater company that operated at the Grand Theater in Reno, Nevada. Then she ventured west where she tenured 18 months at the old Central Theatre in San Francisco, California. This was followed by a season in stock in San Diego, California and then a long one in Alaska with T.D. Frawley. During the Alaska tour Evelyn alternated leads with Virginia Thornton. Alfred Allen (April 8, 1866 – June 18, 1947) was an American silent film actor and author. Early life Allen was born in Alfred, New York. His parents were Jonathan Macomber Allen (1823-1892), president of Alfred University, and Abigail Ann (Maxson) Allen (1824-1894). Alfred's siblings were William (b. 1853), Eva (b. 1856), and May (b. 1860). He attended Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the New England Conservatory of Music and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Alfred University. William Stowell
William Stowell (March 13, 1885 – November 24, 1919) was an American silent film actor. A handsome actor with matinee idol good looks, Stowell was signed into film in 1909 with IMP (forerunner of Universal Studios), and debuted by starring in the popular hit '' The Cowboy Millionaire'' (1909), also starring Tom Mix. Between 1909 and 1919 Stowell starred in 119 silent films, often playing in over 10 films a year. In 1915 he starred in ''The Great Question'' alongside actors such as Harold Lockwood with American Studios. In 1916 he starred in ''The Love Hermit'' portraying Jack Hillman, and began appearing in a series of Universal features that paired him with Lon Chaney and Dorothy Phillips. Dorothy Phillips (born Dorothy Gwendolyn Strible, October 30, 1889 – March 1, 1980) was an American stage and film actress. She is known for her emotional performances in melodramas, having played a number of "brow beaten" women on screen, but had a pleasant demeanor off. She garnered little press for anything outside of her work. Career Born Dorothy Gwendolyn Strible in Baltimore, Phillips was educated at the College of Expression of Maryland and once graduated acted with the George Fawcett Stock Co. Phillips began her career as a stage actress for Colonel Savage Productions acting in New York and Chicago.
