The Goodwood
The Goodwood is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three years old and older, run at set weights with penalties, over a distance of 1200 metres at Morphettville Racecourse, Adelaide, South Australia in the SAJC Autumn Carnival. History In 2007 the race conditions were set weights and penalties after previously being a handicap race throughout its 121-year history and was renamed The Goodwood from Goodwood Handicap. The event is the richest sprint race in autumn in Adelaide with $502,250 in prize money. The race was a principal race until 1980 when it was granted Group 1 status. In the years between 1881–1885 the distance was one mile. The race has always attracted high calibre sprinters. Recently such champions as Black Caviar and Takeover Target have won the race who have gone on to win overseas. Two horses have won the race twice with Mostyn (1894–95) and Musket Belle (1911–12). A tote board (or totalisator/totalizator) is a numeric or alphanumeric display used to convey information, typically at a race track (to display the odds or payoffs for each horse) or at a telethon (to display the total amount donated to the charitable organization sponsoring the event). The term "tote board" comes from the colloquialism for "totalizator" (or "totalisator"), the name for the automated system which runs parimutuel betting, calculating payoff odds, displaying them, and producing tickets based on incoming bets. Parimutuel systems had used totalisator boards since the 1860s and they were often housed in substantial buildings. Royal Gem (foaled 1942 in Australia) was a versatile Thoroughbred racehorse that won 23 races ranging from 5 furlongs (1,000 metres) to 12 furlongs (2,400 m). He was later a successful sire in the United States. Glamour Puss (foaled 5 October 2000 – 2016) was a New Zealand thoroughbred racemare who also raced in Australia. She was trained by Paul O'Sullivan in New Zealand and Danny O'Brien in Australia. Sired by Tale of the Cat to dam Centaine, she was the winner of two Group One races in 2005, including The Goodwood and Salinger Stakes. Platelet (foaled 2 November 2008) was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. Platelet is a retired multiple Group 1 winning mare who was trained by Ballarat-based trainer Darren Weir who during her racing career won $1,396,250. Her consistency was highlighted winning 10 races with a further 9 second placing out of only 32 starts.
