The Giddy Game Show
''The Giddy Game Show'' is an animated quiz show for pre-school children, on Children's ITV made by Yorkshire Television from 1985 to 1987. Scripts were by Marian Lines and Joy Whitby. The first interactive children's television programme. Using technology developed by Peter Schrek, children had a wand to indicate objects on the screen. Overview The programme was set in a scientific observatory inhabited by Giddy, a friendly alien who flew around on a magic pink pencil, setting simple games and puzzles. Redvers Kyle provided the voice for Giddy, although the little alien sounded very different from the familiar and distinctive sound of Kyle in his regular role as programme announcer for Yorkshire Television. Marian Lines
Marian Alice Lines (née Berry-Hart; 27 November 1933 – 10 November 2012) was a British writer and actress. The majority of Lines' works are libretti for musical productions, and many are for performance by children. Biography Her mother was a missionary’s daughter and a talented pianist with a love of spirituals. Her father was a chartered accountant and her grandfather was David Berry Hart a renowned Edinburgh surgeon. At six weeks old Lines' family moved to Carthage in Tunisia. At the age of two she returned to London. Her father then got job with the Trinidad telephone company. The family was ready to return from Trinidad to England when war broke out. Lines spent her early childhood in Trinidad swimming and climbing trees. In 1944, following her father’s injury, the family returned by convoy to England, landing in Liverpool. Joy Whitby
Joy Whitby (born 27 July 1930) is an English television producer and executive who has specialised in children's programmes during her career. Early life Whitby read History at St Anne's College, Oxford, and, after graduating, her first job was as a secretary at the Mayfair Delinquency Clinic. She joined the BBC as a studio manager in 1955 and, a year later, became a producer on ''Listen with Mother''. She moved from radio to television in 1962. BBC children's television During an attachment to the children's television series '' Blue Peter'', Whitby was commissioned to write an internal BBC report on ''Watch with Mother''; the five pre-filmed series had been on air for a decade. ITV Yorkshire, previously known as Yorkshire Television and commonly referred to as just YTV, is the British television service provided by ITV Broadcasting Limited for the Yorkshire franchise area on the ITV (TV network), ITV network. Until 1974, this was primarily the historic county of Yorkshire and parts of neighbouring counties served by the Emley Moor transmitting station, Emley Moor transmitter. ITV (TV Network)
ITV is a British free-to-air public broadcast television network. It was launched in 1955 as Independent Television to provide competition to BBC Television (established in 1936). ITV is the oldest commercial network in the UK. Since the passing of the Broadcasting Act 1990, it has been legally known as Channel 3 to distinguish it from the other analogue channels at the time, BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4. ITV was for four decades a network of separate companies which provided regional television services and also shared programmes between each other to be shown on the entire network. Each franchise was originally owned by a different company. Redvers Kyle
Redvers Buller Kyle (25 November 1929 – 18 November 2015) was a South African-born British broadcaster, voice over artist, actor and composer, best known for his work on the ITV network in the United Kingdom over forty years. Biography Redvers Kyle was born in Germiston, South Africa and named after General Sir Redvers Buller, the British military commander in the early stages of the Anglo-Boer War. During his university studies, he began his broadcasting career with the South African Broadcasting Corporation in Johannesburg, mostly in children's programmes, and appeared in dramatic productions including ''Boy with a Cart'', which won him an award at a national drama festival. Kyle emigrated to England in August 1952, and spent a year as a primary school teacher in south London before becoming a freelance radio and television broadcaster. Bernard Bresslaw
Bernard Bresslaw (25 February 193411 June 1993) was a British actor. He is best known as a member of the ''Carry On'' film franchise. Bresslaw also worked on television and stage, did recordings and wrote a series of poetry. Biography Bernard Bresslaw was born the youngest of three boys into a Jewish family in Stepney, London, on 25 February 1934. He attended the Coopers' Company's School in Tredegar Square, Bow, London E3. His father was a tailor's cutter and he became interested in acting after visits to the Hackney Empire. London County Council awarded him a scholarship to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where he won the Emile Littler Award as the most promising actor. After ''Educating Archie'' on radio and ''The Army Game'' on television, more television, film and Shakespearean theatre roles followed, until he was cast in ''Carry On Cowboy'' in 1965. Richard Vernon
Richard Evelyn Vernon (7 March 1925 – 4 December 1997) was a British actor. He appeared in many feature films and television programmes, often in aristocratic or supercilious roles. Prematurely balding and greying, Vernon settled into playing archetypal middle-aged lords and military types while still in his 30s. He is perhaps best known for originating the role of Slartibartfast in ''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy''. Other notable roles included Edwin Oldenshaw in ''The Man in Room 17'' (1965–67), Sir James Greenley, alias "C" in ''The Sandbaggers'' (1978–80) and Sir Desmond Glazebrook in ''Yes Minister'' (1980–81) and its sequel series ''Yes, Prime Minister'' (1987).
