The Gibson Family
''The Gibson Family'' is an American old-time radio program — the first original musical comedy on radio. It was broadcast on NBC from September 15, 1934, until June 23, 1935, when the format was revamped and the title was changed to ''Uncle Charlie's Tent Show'', which ran from June 30, 1935, until September 8, 1935. Format ''The Gibson Family'' might be considered a musical soap opera. It focused on day-to-day activities of the title household and incorporated music composed specifically for the program. A preview of the show published in ''The Bismarck Tribune'' on the day of its premiere noted, "The story of the Gibson Family will be continuous but each episode will be complete in itself." The main characters were Bob and Dot Gibson, Sally (their daughter), and a butler named Awful. Charles Winninger
Charles J. Winninger (May 26, 1884 – January 27, 1969) was an American stage and film actor, most often cast in comedies or musicals. Life and career Winninger was born in Athens, Wisconsin, the son of Rosalia (Grassler) and Franz Winninger. His parents were Austrian immigrants. He began as a vaudeville actor. His most famous stage role was as Cap'n Andy Hawks in the original production of ''Show Boat'', the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II musical classic, in 1927. He played the role in the 1932 stage revival and the 1936 film version of the show. He became so identified with the role and with his persona as a riverboat captain that he played several variations of the role, notably on the radio program ''Maxwell House Show Boat'', which was clearly inspired by the Broadway musical. Anne Elstner
Anne Elstner Matthews (January 22, 1899 – January 29, 1981) was an American actress best known for her role in the radio soap opera '' Stella Dallas'' during its entire run from 1937 to 1955. For 18 years, Elstner voiced the serial's title character, described by ''The New York Times'' as "the beautiful daughter of an impoverished farmhand who had married above her station in life." Harold "Scrappy" Lambert (May 12, 1901 – November 30, 1987, in New Brunswick, New Jersey) was an American dance band vocalist who appeared on hundreds of recordings from the 1920s to the 1940s. At Rutgers University he was a cheerleader and played piano for a jazz group, the Rutgers Jazz Bandits. In February 1925, he and fellow student Billy Hillpot formed a musical duo impersonating the Smith Brothers. They were discovered in 1926 by Ben Bernie, who signed them to perform with his orchestra. Eddie Green (August 16, 1896 – September 19, 1950) was an American actor, film director, composer, and radio personality best known for his vocal work in the radio programs ''Amos 'n' Andy'', and ''Duffy's Tavern''. Early life and career Eddie Green was born on August 16, 1896 in Baltimore, Maryland. Before age eight he had already gained a reputation in local show business circles by performing as a "boy magician" in Baltimore area churches. As he grew into his teen years he started to gain employment in local concert halls as a magician before breaking into the vaudeville circuit, where he made nine dollars a week. Early in his vaudeville career, Green began to branch out from magic and work in burlesque acts. For eleven years, Green worked with the legendary vaudeville company headed by Billy Minsky, Minsky's Burlesque. ''Revenge with Music'' is a musical comedy with book and lyrics by Howard Dietz and music by Arthur Schwartz, that opened on Broadway in 1934. This was the first "book" musical by Dietz and Schwartz. Background and productions Dietz, inspired by a trip to Spain, wrote his libretto based on the Spanish novel ''El sombrero de tres picos'' by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. The duo had wanted to write something other than the revues they had been doing. The musical takes place in Spain in 1800, and involves a young Spanish couple, played by Libby Holman, as Maria a young, new bride, and Georges Metaxa as Carlos, her new groom. The story is based on a Spanish folk tale about seduction.
