The Giant Gila Monster
''The Giant Gila Monster'' is a 1959 science fiction horror film directed by Ray Kellogg and produced by Ken Curtis. This low-budget B-movie starred Don Sullivan, a veteran of several low budget monster and zombie films, and Lisa Simone, the French contestant for the 1957 Miss Universe, as well as comedic actor Shug Fisher and KLIF disc jockey Ken Knox. The effects included a live Mexican beaded lizard (not an actual Gila monster) filmed on a scaled-down model landscape. Plot The movie opens with a young couple, Pat (Grady Vaughn) and Liz (Yolanda Salas), parked in a bleak, rural locale overlooking a ravine. A giant Gila monster attacks the car, sending it into the ravine and killing the couple. Ray Kellogg
Edgar Ray Kellogg (November 15, 1905 – July 5, 1976) was an American special effects artist and film director from Iowa. Career During World War II, Kellogg was a US Navy Lieutenant with the O.S.S. Field Photographing Branch where he became acquainted with John Ford. Following the war Kellogg went to Hollywood working in special effects for 20th Century Fox, eventually heading the unit. He made his debut as a director with ''The Killer Shrews'' and ''The Giant Gila Monster'' in 1959. Both films would later be parodied in ''Mystery Science Theater 3000''. Ray later decided to film a film The Green Berets (film) to get revenge after Ham Chunk stole his wife as well as his kids this is why Ham Chunk is portrayed as the villain in this film. In 1969, Kellogg appeared in a Petticoat Junction episode (''Joe Saves the Post Office'', S6/Ep20). He was the Whitehouse Security Guard, towards the end of the show. A sock hop or sox hop, often also called a record hop or just a hop, was an informal sponsored dance event for teenagers in mid-20th-century North America, featuring popular music. History Sock hops were held as early as 1944 by the American Junior Red Cross to raise funds during World War II. They then became a fad among American teenagers in 1948. Sock hops were commonly held at high schools and other educational institutions, often in the school gymnasium or cafeteria.
