''The Gershwin Connection'' is an album by American pianist Dave Grusin released in 1991, recorded for the GRP label. The album reached #1 on ''Billboards jazz chart. The medley Bess, You Is My Woman Now/I Loves You Porgy received the 1992 Grammy Award for Best Arrangement of an Instrumental. Dave Grusin
Robert David "Dave" Grusin (born June 26, 1934) is an American composer, arranger, producer, jazz pianist, and band leader. He has composed many scores for feature films and television, and has won numerous awards for his soundtrack and record work, including an Academy Awards, Academy Award and 10 Grammy Awards. In 1978, Grusin founded GRP Records with Larry Rosen (producer), Larry Rosen, and was an early pioneer of digital recording. Early life Grusin was born in Littleton, Colorado, to Henri and Rosabelle (née de Poyster) Grusin. His mother was a pianist and his father was a violinist from Riga, Latvia. Grusin has one Jewish parent. Grusin studied music at the University of Colorado at Boulder and received his degree in 1956. History According to Ira Gershwin in his book ''Lyrics on Several Occasions'', after the premiere of ''Funny Face'' in Philadelphia he received a call from the then professional manager of Shapiro, Bernstein and Co. asking him to remove the song because ''“It doesn't mean anything”'' and because ''“Well, we've bought a song with the same title and we're about to publish it. Yours doesn't get you anywhere, so how about taking it out of the show?”'' Eventually the song was deleted as Ira Gershwin indicates, ''“Well, he had'' his ''wish. Eric Marienthal (born December 19, 1957) is a Grammy Award-nominated Los Angeles-based contemporary saxophonist best known for his work in the jazz, jazz fusion, smooth jazz, and pop genres. Early life Eric Marienthal was born on December 19, 1957 in Sacramento, California to Robert Marienthal, an insurance salesman, but moved to San Mateo when he was two years old. He has credited his enthusiasm for music on being taught music while in school, and picked up the saxophone in the fourth grade after he thought it looked "pretty cool". Marienthal has also mentioned his father was a fan of music, particularly 1940s and 1950s such as Boots Randolph, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. Eddie Daniels (born October 19, 1941) is an American musician and composer. Although he is best known as a jazz clarinetist, he has also played saxophone and flute as well as classical music on clarinet. Early life, family and education Daniels was born in New York City to a Jewish family. His mother emigrated from Romania. He was raised in the Manhattan Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. He became interested in jazz as a teenager when he was impressed by the musicians accompanying singers, such as Frank Sinatra, on recordings. Daniels' first instrument was the alto saxophone. Dave Weckl
Dave Weckl (born January 8, 1960 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American jazz fusion drummer and the leader of the Dave Weckl Band. He was inducted into the ''Modern Drummer'' Hall of Fame in 2000. Biography Weckl started playing his first set of drums at age 8 in his spare room along to records. He later played in the living room, sometimes with his father on piano. Weckl studied at the University of Bridgeport. Don Grusin (born April 22, 1941) is an American jazz keyboardist, composer, and record producer. He is the younger brother of Dave Grusin. Career Don Grusin grew up in Littleton, Colorado. His father, a native of Latvia, was a classical violinist. His brother, Dave Grusin, is a pianist, record producer, and co-founder of GRP Records. Grusin graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in economics.
